Time indeed is of great power, insurmountable for all beings—since you report, O Saṃjaya, that Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, has fallen.

english translation

Afflicted by grief for my sons, not fully considering the magnitude of the suffering, I formerly expected deliverance from Bhīṣma, the delight of Śāntanu.

english translation

When Duryodhana beheld Śāṃtanava (Bhīṣma) fallen upon the earth, like the sun set from the sky, O Sañjaya, what course did he then adopt?

english translation

As I reflect, O Sañjaya, I do not, by my understanding, perceive any remaining advantage—whether for my own side or for the opposing side—among the kings arrayed in counter-formations.

english translation

Severe indeed is this kṣatriya-duty, as delineated by the sages—wherein the Pāṇḍavas seek sovereignty after bringing down Śāṃtanava (Bhīṣma).
