Even if we are alive today, what strength remains in us, O Saṃjaya, after bringing about the fall of that mighty father, a man aligned with the dharma that upholds the world’s order?

english translation

As swimmers, seeing a boat sink in deep water, are overwhelmed—so, I think, the princes grieve intensely in great distress when Bhīṣma has fallen.

english translation

Surely my heart is made of mountain-stone, exceedingly hard—since, on hearing that Bhīṣma, the tiger among men, has fallen, it does not break apart.

english translation

In him, O bull among the Bharatas, weapon-skill, intelligence, and policy were immeasurable and unassailable—how, then, was he brought down in the engagement?

english translation

Not by weaponry, not by heroism, not by austerity, nor by intelligence; not by endurance, nor again by renunciation—does anyone become free from death.
