Now we shall discourse on the chapter which deals with the pathology of the diseases which are peculiar to the Drishti (pupil) of the eye.

मसूरदलमात्रां तु पञ्चभूतप्रसादजाम् | खद्योतविस्फुलिङ्गाभामिद्धां तेजोभिरव्ययैः ||३||

The pupil (Drishti) is the essence of the five material elements, possessing a light that is neither increasing nor decreasing. It appears like the phosphorescent glow of a firefly, shining with imperishable radiance.

आवृतां पटलेनाक्ष्णोर्बाह्येन विवराकृतिम् | शीतसात्म्यां नृणां दृष्टिमाहुर्नयनचिन्तकाः ||४||

The eye's pupil, which is covered by the outer coating (Patala) and appears as a hole, is described by ophthalmologists as being naturally cold in temperament.

रोगांस्तदाश्रयान् घोरान् षट् च षट् च प्रचक्ष्महे | पटलानुप्रविष्टस्य तिमिरस्य च लक्षणम् ||५||

We shall now describe the six severe diseases that affect the pupil, as well as the signs and symptoms of Timira (loss of vision) when the deranged Doshas enter the Patala (coat) of the eye.
