अथातोऽपस्मारप्रतिषेधमध्यायं व्याख्यास्यामः ॥१॥
Now we shall discourse on the chapter which deals with the (symptoms and) medical treatment of Apasmara (Epilepsy).

hk transliteration by Sanscriptस्मृतिर्भूतार्थविज्ञानमपश्च परिवर्जने । अपस्मार इति प्रोक्तस्ततोऽयं व्याधिरन्तकृत् ॥३॥
The word “Smriti” signifies the faculty of past sense-perceptions and (the prefix) “Apa” denotes the privation (of any object or attribute). Hence, this disease (in which an individual loses the faculty of past cognitions) is termed Apasmara (Epilepsy) and it turns fatal.

स्मृति शब्द भूतकालीन इन्द्रिय-बोध की क्षमता को दर्शाता है और (उपसर्ग) अपा (किसी वस्तु या गुण की) कमी को दर्शाता है। इसलिए, इस रोग (जिसमें व्यक्ति भूतकालीन ज्ञान की क्षमता खो देता है) को अपस्मार (मिर्गी) कहा जाता है और यह घातक हो जाता है।

hk transliteration by Sanscriptमिथ्यातियोगेन्द्रियार्थकर्मणामभिसेवनात् । विरुद्धमलिनाहारविहारकुपितैर्मलैः ॥४॥
By excessive, improper, or erroneous engagement of the senses with their objects and actions, and through the consumption of incompatible, impure, or unwholesome food and behavior, the bodily Doshas (humors) become aggravated.

इन्द्रियों का अपने विषयों और कार्यों के साथ अत्यधिक, अनुचित या त्रुटिपूर्ण संलग्नता, तथा असंगत, अशुद्ध या अस्वास्थ्यकर भोजन और व्यवहार के सेवन से शारीरिक दोष (द्रव्य) बढ़ जाते हैं।

mithyAtiyogendriyArthakarmaNAmabhisevanAt । viruddhamalinAhAravihArakupitairmalaiH ॥4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवेगनिग्रहशीलानामहिताशुचिभोजिनाम् । रजस्तमोभिभूतानां गच्छतां च रजस्वलाम् ॥५॥
In individuals who suppress natural urges, consume harmful and impure food, or are dominated by Rajas and Tamas (mental disturbances), and in those who approach a menstruating woman, the Doshas (bodily humors) become aggravated.

जो व्यक्ति प्राकृतिक इच्छाओं को दबाते हैं, हानिकारक और अशुद्ध भोजन का सेवन करते हैं, या जिनमें राजस और तामस (मानसिक गड़बड़ी) हावी होते हैं, तथा जो मासिक धर्म वाली महिला के पास जाते हैं, उनमें दोष (शारीरिक द्रव्य) बढ़ जाते हैं।
