हिरण्मयः स पुरुषः सहस्रपरिवत्सरान् । आण्डकोश उवासाप्सु सर्वसत्त्वोपबृंहितः ।। ३-६-६ ।।

sanskrit

The gigantic virāṭ-puruṣa, known as Hiraṇmaya, lived for one thousand celestial years on the water of the universe, and all the living entities lay with Him. ।। 3-6-6 ।।

english translation

विराट पुरुष जो हिरण्मय कहलाता है, ब्रह्माण्ड के जल में एक हजार दैवी वर्षों तक रहता रहा और सारे जीव उसके साथ शयन करते रहे। ।। ३-६-६ ।।

स वै विश्वसृजां गर्भो देवकर्मात्मशक्तिमान् । विबभाजात्मनाऽऽत्मानमेकधा दशधा त्रिधा ।। ३-६-७ ।।

sanskrit

The total energy of the mahat-tattva, in the form of the gigantic virāṭ-rūpa, divided Himself by Himself into the consciousness of the living entities, the life of activity, and self-identification, which are subdivided into one, ten and three respectively. ।। 3-6-7 ।।

english translation

विराट रूप में महत् तत्त्व की समग्र शक्ति ने स्वत: अपने को जीवों की चेतना, जीवन की क्रियाशीलता तथा आत्म-पहचान के रूप में विभाजित कर लिया जो एक, दस तथा तीन में क्रमश: उपविभाजित हो गए हैं। ।। ३-६-७ ।।

एष ह्यशेषसत्त्वानामात्मांशः परमात्मनः । आद्योऽवतारो यत्रासौ भूतग्रामो विभाव्यते ।। ३-६-८ ।।

sanskrit

The gigantic universal form of the Supreme Lord is the first incarnation and plenary portion of the Supersoul. He is the Self of an unlimited number of living entities, and in Him rests the aggregate creation, which thus flourishes. ।। 3-6-8 ।।

english translation

भगवान् का विश्वरूप प्रथम अवतार तथा परमात्मा का स्वांश होता है। वे असंख्य जीवों के आत्मा हैं और उनमें समुच्चित सृष्टि (भूतग्राम) टिकी रहती है, जो इस तरह फलती फूलती है। ।। ३-६-८ ।।

साध्यात्मः साधिदैवश्च साधिभूत इति त्रिधा । विराट् प्राणो दशविध एकधा हृदयेन च ।। ३-६-९ ।।

sanskrit

The gigantic universal form is represented by three, ten and one in the sense that He is the body and the mind and the senses, He is the dynamic force for all movements by ten kinds of life energy, and He is the one heart where life energy is generated. ।। 3-6-9 ।।

english translation

विश्वरूप तीन, दस तथा एक के द्वारा इस अर्थ में प्रस्तुत होता है कि वे (भगवान्) शरीर तथा मन और इन्द्रियाँ हैं। वे ही दस प्रकार की जीवन शक्ति द्वारा समस्त गतियों की गत्यात्मक शक्ति हैं और वे ही एक हृदय हैं जहाँ जीवन-शक्ति सृजित होती है। ।। ३-६-९ ।।

sAdhyAtmaH sAdhidaivazca sAdhibhUta iti tridhA | virAT prANo dazavidha ekadhA hRdayena ca || 3-6-9 ||

स्मरन्विश्वसृजामीशो विज्ञापितमधोक्षजः । विराजमतपत्स्वेन तेजसैषां विवृत्तये ।। ३-६-१० ।।

sanskrit

The Supreme Lord is the Supersoul of all the demigods entrusted with the task of constructing the cosmic manifestation. Being thus prayed to [by the demigods], He thought to Himself and thus manifested the gigantic form for their understanding. ।। 3-6-10 ।।

english translation

परम प्रभु इस विराट जगत की रचना का कार्यभार सँभालने वाले समस्त देवताओं के परमात्मा हैं। इस तरह (देवताओं द्वारा) प्रार्थना किये जाने पर उन्होंने मन में विचार किया और तब उनको समझाने के लिए अपना विराट रूप प्रकट किया। ।। ३-६-१० ।।
