अर्थाश्रयत्वं शब्दस्य द्रष्टुर्लिङ्गत्वमेव च । तन्मात्रत्वं च नभसो लक्षणं कवयो विदुः ।। ३-२६-३३ ।।

sanskrit

Persons who are learned and who have true knowledge define sound as that which conveys the idea of an object, indicates the presence of a speaker screened from our view and constitutes the subtle form of ether. ।। 3-26-33 ।।

english translation

जो लोग विद्वान हैं और वास्तविक ज्ञान से युक्त हैं, वे शब्द की परिभाषा इस प्रकार करते हैं अर्थात् वह जो किसी पदार्थ के विचार (अर्थ) को वहन करता है, ओट में खड़े वक्ता की उपस्थिति को सूचित करता है और आकाश का सूक्ष्म रूप होता है। ।। ३-२६-३३ ।।
