मैत्रेय उवाच गुणव्यतिकराकारो निर्विशेषोऽप्रतिष्ठितः । पुरुषस्तदुपादानमात्मानं लीलयासृजत् ।। ३-१०-११ ।।

sanskrit

Maitreya said: Eternal time is the primeval source of the interactions of the three modes of material nature. It is unchangeable and limitless, and it works as the instrument of the Supreme Personality of Godhead for His pastimes in the material creation. ।। 3-10-11 ।।

english translation

मैत्रेय ने कहा : नित्यकाल ही प्रकृति के तीनों गुणों की अन्योन्य क्रियाओं का आदि स्रोत है। यह अपरिवर्तनशील तथा सीमारहित है और भौतिक सृजन की लीलाओं में यह भगवान् के निमित्त रूप में कार्य करता है। ।। ३-१०-११ ।।

विश्वं वै ब्रह्म तन्मात्रं संस्थितं विष्णुमायया । ईश्वरेण परिच्छिन्नं कालेनाव्यक्तमूर्तिना ।। ३-१०-१२ ।।

sanskrit

This cosmic manifestation is separated from the Supreme Lord as material energy by means of kāla, which is the unmanifested, impersonal feature of the Lord. It is situated as the objective manifestation of the Lord under the influence of the same material energy of Viṣṇu. ।। 3-10-12 ।।

english translation

यह विराट जगत भौतिक शक्ति के रूप में अप्रकट तथा भगवान् के निर्विशेष स्वरूप काल द्वारा भगवान् से विलग किया हुआ है। यह विष्णु की उसी भौतिक शक्ति के प्रभाव के अधीन भगवान् की वस्तुगत अभिव्यक्ति के रूप में स्थित है। ।। ३-१०-१२ ।।

यथेदानीं तथाग्रे च पश्चादप्येतदीदृशम् । सर्गो नवविधस्तस्य प्राकृतो वैकृतस्तु यः ।। ३-१०-१३ ।।

sanskrit

This cosmic manifestation is as it is now, it was the same in the past, and it will continue in the same way in the future. There are nine different kinds of creations besides the one which naturally occurs due to the interactions of the modes. ।। 3-10-13 ।।

english translation

यह विराट जगत जैसा अब है वैसा ही रहता है। यह भूतकाल में भी ऐसा ही था और भविष्य में इसी तरह रहेगा। उस एक सृष्टि के अतिरिक्त जो गुणों की अन्योन्य क्रियाओं के फलस्वरूप स्वाभाविक रूप से घटित होती है नौ प्रकार की अन्य सृष्टियाँ भी हैं। ।। ३-१०-१३ ।।

कालद्रव्यगुणैरस्य त्रिविधः प्रतिसङ्क्रमः । आद्यस्तु महतः सर्गो गुणवैषम्यमात्मनः ।। ३-१०-१४ ।।

sanskrit

There are three kinds of annihilations due to eternal time, the material elements and the quality of one’s work. Of the nine creations, the first one is the creation of the mahat-tattva, or the sum total of the material ingredients, wherein the modes interact due to the presence of the Supreme Lord. ।। 3-10-14 ।।

english translation

नित्य काल, भौतिक तत्त्वों तथा मनुष्य के कार्य के गुण के कारण प्रलय तीन प्रकार का है। नौ सृष्टियों में से पहली सृष्टि महत् तत्त्वसृष्टि अर्थात् भौतिक घटकों की समग्रता है, जिसमें परमेश्वर की उपस्थिति के कारण गुणों में परस्पर क्रिया होती है। ।। ३-१०-१४ ।।

द्वितीयस्त्वहमो यत्र द्रव्यज्ञानक्रियोदयः । भूतसर्गस्तृतीयस्तु तन्मात्रो द्रव्यशक्तिमान् ।। ३-१०-१५ ।।

In the second, the false ego is generated, in which the material ingredients, material knowledge and material activities arise. The sense perceptions are created in the third creation, and from these the elements are generated. ।। 3-10-15 ।।

english translation

द्वितीय सृष्टि में मिथ्या अहंकार उत्पन्न होता है, जिसमें से भौतिक घटक, भौतिक ज्ञान तथा भौतिक कार्यकलाप प्रकट होते हैं। इन्द्रिय विषयों का सृजन तृतीय सृष्टि में होता है और इनसे तत्त्व उत्पन्न होते हैं। ।। ३-१०-१५ ।।
