एवं दुराशया ध्वस्तनिद्रा द्वार्यवलम्बती । निर्गच्छन्ती प्रविशती निशीथं समपद्यत ।। ११-८-२६ ।।

Thus, with vain hope, she remained leaning against the doorway, unable to finish her business and go to sleep. Out of anxiety she would sometimes walk out toward the street, and sometimes she went back into her house. In this way, the midnight hour gradually arrived. ।। 11-8-26 ।।

english translation

इस प्रकार, व्यर्थ आशा के साथ, वह दरवाजे के सहारे टिकी रही, अपना काम पूरा करने और सोने में असमर्थ रही। चिंता के मारे वह कभी बाहर सड़क की ओर चली जाती, तो कभी अपने घर में वापस चली जाती। इस प्रकार धीरे-धीरे आधी रात का समय आ गया। ।। ११-८-२६ ।।

तस्या वित्ताशया शुष्यद्वक्त्राया दीनचेतसः । निर्वेदः परमो जज्ञे चिन्ताहेतुः सुखावहः ।। ११-८-२७ ।।

sanskrit

As the night wore on, the prostitute, who intensely desired money, gradually became morose, and her face dried up. Thus being filled with anxiety for money and most disappointed, she began to feel a great detachment from her situation, and happiness arose in her mind. ।। 11-8-27 ।।

english translation

जैसे-जैसे रात होती गई, वेश्या, जो धन की तीव्र इच्छा रखती थी, धीरे-धीरे उदास हो गई और उसका चेहरा सूख गया। इस प्रकार धन की चिन्ता से भर जाने और अत्यन्त निराश होने के कारण वह अपनी स्थिति से बड़ी विरक्ति अनुभव करने लगी और उसके मन में प्रसन्नता उत्पन्न हो गयी। ।। ११-८-२७ ।।

तस्या निर्विण्णचित्ताया गीतं श‍ृणु यथा मम । निर्वेद आशापाशानां पुरुषस्य यथा ह्यसिः ।। ११-८-२८ ।।

The prostitute felt disgusted with her material situation and thus became indifferent to it. Indeed, detachment acts like a sword, cutting to pieces the binding network of material hopes and desires. Now please hear from me the song sung by the prostitute in that situation. ।। 11-8-28 ।।

वेश्या को अपनी भौतिक स्थिति से घृणा होने लगी और वह इसके प्रति उदासीन हो गई। दरअसल, वैराग्य एक तलवार की तरह काम करता है, जो भौतिक आशाओं और इच्छाओं के बंधनकारी जाल को टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर देता है। अब कृपया उस स्थिति में वेश्या द्वारा गाया गया गीत मुझसे सुनिए। ।। ११-८-२८ ।।

न ह्यङ्गाजातनिर्वेदो देहबन्धं जिहासति । यथा विज्ञानरहितो मनुजो ममतां नृप ।। ११-८-२९ ।।

O King, just as a human being who is bereft of spiritual knowledge never desires to give up his false sense of proprietorship over many material things, similarly, a person who has not developed detachment never desires to give up the bondage of the material body. ।। 11-8-29 ।।

english translation

हे राजन, जिस प्रकार आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान से वंचित मनुष्य कभी भी कई भौतिक वस्तुओं पर स्वामित्व की अपनी झूठी भावना को छोड़ना नहीं चाहता है, उसी प्रकार, जिस व्यक्ति में वैराग्य विकसित नहीं हुआ है वह कभी भी भौतिक शरीर के बंधन को छोड़ने की इच्छा नहीं रखता है। ।। ११-८-२९ ।।

The prostitute Piṅgalā said: Just see how greatly illusioned I am! Because I cannot control my mind, just like a fool I desire lusty pleasure from an insignificant man. ।। 11-8-30 ।।

english translation

वेश्या पिंगला ने कहा: देखो मैं कितनी बड़ी भ्रमित हूँ! चूँकि मैं अपने मन को वश में नहीं कर सकता, इसलिए मैं मूर्ख की भाँति एक तुच्छ मनुष्य से काम-सुख की कामना करता हूँ। ।। ११-८-३० ।।
