ब्राह्मण उवाच सुखमैन्द्रियकं राजन् स्वर्गे नरक एव च । देहिनां यद्यथा दुःखं तस्मान्नेच्छेत तद्बुधः ।। ११-८-१ ।।

The saintly brāhmaṇa said: O King, the embodied living entity automatically experiences unhappiness in heaven or hell. Similarly, happiness will also be experienced, even without one’s seeking it. Therefore a person of intelligent discrimination does not make any endeavor to obtain such material happiness. ।। 11-8-1 ।।

english translation

साधु ब्राह्मण ने कहा: हे राजन, देहधारी जीव स्वतः ही स्वर्ग या नरक में दुःख का अनुभव करता है। इसी प्रकार, बिना मांगे भी खुशी का अनुभव होगा। इसलिए बुद्धिमान विवेकशील व्यक्ति ऐसे भौतिक सुख को प्राप्त करने के लिए कोई प्रयास नहीं करता है। ।। ११-८-१ ।।

ग्रासं सुमृष्टं विरसं महान्तं स्तोकमेव वा । यदृच्छयैवापतितं ग्रसेदाजगरोऽक्रियः ।। ११-८-२ ।।

Following the example of the python, one should give up material endeavors and accept for one’s maintenance food that comes of its own accord, whether such food be delicious or tasteless, ample or meager. ।। 11-8-2 ।।

अजगर के उदाहरण का अनुसरण करते हुए, व्यक्ति को भौतिक प्रयासों को छोड़ देना चाहिए और अपने भरण-पोषण के लिए वह भोजन स्वीकार करना चाहिए जो स्वयं आता है, चाहे वह भोजन स्वादिष्ट हो या बेस्वाद, प्रचुर या कम। ।। ११-८-२ ।।

शयीताहानि भूरीणि निराहारोऽनुपक्रमः । यदि नोपनमेद्ग्रासो महाहिरिव दिष्टभुक् ।। ११-८-३ ।।

If at any time food does not come, then a saintly person should fast for many days without making endeavor. He should understand that by God’s arrangement he must fast. Thus, following the example of the python, he should remain peaceful and patient ।। 11-8-3 ।।

english translation

यदि किसी समय भोजन न मिले तो साधु व्यक्ति को बिना प्रयास किये कई दिनों तक उपवास करना चाहिए। उसे समझना चाहिए कि ईश्वर की व्यवस्था के अनुसार उसे उपवास करना चाहिए। अत: उसे अजगर का अनुकरण करते हुए शान्त एवं धैर्यवान रहना चाहिए। ।। ११-८-३ ।।

ओजः सहो बलयुतं बिभ्रद्देहमकर्मकम् । शयानो वीतनिद्रश्च नेहेतेन्द्रियवानपि ।। ११-८-४ ।।

A saintly person should remain peaceful and materially inactive, maintaining his body without much endeavor. Even though possessed of full sensual, mental and physical strength, a saintly person should not become active for material gain but rather should always remain alert to his actual self-interest. ।। 11-8-4 ।।

एक साधु व्यक्ति को बिना अधिक प्रयास के अपने शरीर को बनाए रखते हुए शांतिपूर्ण और भौतिक रूप से निष्क्रिय रहना चाहिए। पूर्ण कामुक, मानसिक और शारीरिक शक्ति से युक्त होते हुए भी, एक साधु व्यक्ति को भौतिक लाभ के लिए सक्रिय नहीं होना चाहिए, बल्कि अपने वास्तविक स्वार्थ के प्रति हमेशा सचेत रहना चाहिए। ।। ११-८-४ ।।

A saintly sage is happy and pleasing in his external behavior, whereas internally he is most grave and thoughtful. Because his knowledge is immeasurable and unlimited he is never disturbed, and thus in all respects he is like the tranquil waters of the unfathomable and unsurpassable ocean. ।। 11-8-5 ।।
