Srimad Bhagavatam
ययोरात्मसमं वित्तं जन्मैश्वर्याकृतिर्भवः । तयोर्विवाहो मैत्री च नोत्तमाधमयोः क्वचित् ॥ १०-६०-१५ ॥
Marriage and friendship are proper between two people who are equal in terms of their wealth, birth, influence, physical appearance and capacity for good progeny, but never between a superior and an inferior. ॥ 10-60-15 ॥

विवाह और मित्रता उन दो लोगों के बीच उचित है जो अपने धन, जन्म, प्रभाव, शारीरिक रूप और अच्छी संतान की क्षमता के मामले में समान हैं, लेकिन श्रेष्ठ और निम्न के बीच कभी नहीं। ॥ १०-६०-१५ ॥
