दृष्ट्वा ह्यात्मसमं लिंगं दग्धं वैश्यपतिस्तदा॥ ज्ञातुन्तद्भावमन्तःस्थम्मरणाय मतिन्दधे ॥ ३६ ॥
On seeing the phallic image as it were his very soul burnt, the lordly merchant desired to end his life in order to know her mentality.

dRSTvA hyAtmasamaM liMgaM dagdhaM vaizyapatistadA॥ jJAtuntadbhAvamantaHsthammaraNAya matindadhe ॥ 36 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनिविश्येतितरां खेदाद्वैश्यस्तामाह दुःखिताम् ॥ नानालीलो महेशानः कौतुकान्नरदेहवान् ॥ ३७ ॥
In great despair and sorrow the merchant told her in grief. Lord Śiva who had assumed a human body just for pleasure indulged in different sports.

nivizyetitarAM khedAdvaizyastAmAha duHkhitAm ॥ nAnAlIlo mahezAnaH kautukAnnaradehavAn ॥ 37 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवैश्यपतिरुवाच ॥ शिवलिंगे तु निर्भिन्ने दग्धे महत्प्राणवल्लभे ॥ सत्यं वच्मि न सन्देहो नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥ ३८ ॥
“O my beloved, when the phallic image is smashed and burnt I do not desire to live. I am telling you the truth. There is no doubt in this.

vaizyapatiruvAca ॥ zivaliMge tu nirbhinne dagdhe mahatprANavallabhe ॥ satyaM vacmi na sandeho nAhaM jIvitumutsahe ॥ 38 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptचितां कारय मे भद्रे स्वभृत्यैस्त्वं वरैर्लघु ॥ शिवे मनस्समावेश्य प्रवेक्ष्यामि हुताशनम् ॥ ३९ ॥
O gentle lady, prepare a pyre for me immediately through your servants. With my mind fixed in Śiva, I shall enter the fire.

citAM kAraya me bhadre svabhRtyaistvaM varairlaghu ॥ zive manassamAvezya pravekSyAmi hutAzanam ॥ 39 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयदि ब्रह्मेन्द्रविष्ण्वाद्या वारयेयुः समेत्य माम् ॥ तथाप्यस्मिन् क्षणे भद्रे प्रविशामि त्यजाम्यसून् ॥ ४० ॥
Even if Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu and others were to prevent me, O gentle lady, I shall enter the fire this moment and shall forsake my life.

yadi brahmendraviSNvAdyA vArayeyuH sametya mAm ॥ tathApyasmin kSaNe bhadre pravizAmi tyajAmyasUn ॥ 40 ॥
