नन्दीश्वर उवाच॥ स्नानं स विधिवत्कृत्वा न्यासादि विधिवत्तथा ॥ ध्यानं शिवस्य सद्भक्त्या व्यासोक्तं यत्तथाऽकरोत् ॥ १॥
Nandīśvara said:— He performed the ablution duly, and the Nyāsa (the mystic placing of fingers etc.) in accordance with the Śāstric injunctions. He performed the meditation of Śiva with great devotion in the manner explained by Vyāsa.
english translation
एकपादतलेनैव तिष्ठन्मुनिवरो यथा ॥ सूर्य्ये दृष्टिं निबध्यैकां मंत्रमावर्तयन्स्थितः ॥ २॥
Like a great sage, he stood on the sole of a single foot. He fixed one of his eyes at the sun and stood repeating the mantra.
english translation
तपस्तेपेति संप्रीत्या संस्मरन्मनसा शिवम् ॥ पंचाक्षरं मनुं शंभोर्जपन्सर्वो त्तमोत्तमम् ॥ ३ ॥
Repeating the five-syllabled mantra of Śiva the most excellent of all the mantras and mentally remembering Śiva with pleasure he performed the penance.
english translation
तपसस्तेज एवासीद्यथा देवा विसिस्मियुः ॥ पुनश्चैव शिवं याताः प्रत्यूचुस्ते समाहिताः ॥ ४ ॥
The splendour of the penance was such that the gods were surprised. They went to Śiva again and told him sincerely.
english translation
देवा ऊचुः ॥ नरेणैकेन सर्वेश त्वदर्थे तप आहितम्॥ यदिच्छति नरस्सोयं किन्न यच्छति तत्प्रभो ॥ ५॥
The gods said:— O lord of all, a penance is being performed by a man for your propiation. O lord, why don’t you grant him what he desires.
