    सर्वभूतेषु चात्मानं सर्वभूतानि चात्मनि । समं पश्यन्नात्मयाजी स्वाराज्यमधिगच्छति ॥ ९१ ॥sarvabhUteSu cAtmAnaM sarvabhUtAni cAtmani । samaM pazyannAtmayAjI svArAjyamadhigacchati ॥ 91 ॥He who sacrifices to the Self (alone), equally recognising the Self in all created beings and all created beings in the Self, becomes (independent like) an autocrat and self-luminous.

    सुखाभ्युदयिकं चैव नैःश्रेयसिकमेव च । प्रवृत्तं च निवृत्तं च द्विविधं कर्म वैदिकम् ॥ ८८ ॥sukhAbhyudayikaM caiva naiHzreyasikameva ca । pravRttaM ca nivRttaM ca dvividhaM karma vaidikam ॥ 88 ॥The acts prescribed by the Veda are of two kinds, such as procure an increase of happiness and cause a continuation (of mundane existence, pravritta), and such as ensure supreme bliss and cause a cessation (of mundane existence, nivritta).

    वैदिके कर्मयोगे तु सर्वाण्येतान्यशेषतः । अन्तर्भवन्ति क्रमशस्तस्मिंस्तस्मिन् क्रियाविधौ ॥ ८७ ॥vaidike karmayoge tu sarvANyetAnyazeSataH । antarbhavanti kramazastasmiMstasmin kriyAvidhau ॥ 87 ॥For in the performance of the acts prescribed by the Veda all those (others) are fully comprised, (each) in its turn in the several rules for the rites.

    षण्णामेषां तु सर्वेषां कर्मणां प्रेत्य चैह च । श्रेयस्करतरं ज्ञेयं सर्वदा कर्म वैदिकम् ॥ ८६ ॥SaNNAmeSAM tu sarveSAM karmaNAM pretya caiha ca । zreyaskarataraM jJeyaM sarvadA karma vaidikam ॥ 86 ॥Among those six (kinds of) actions (enumerated) above, the performance of) the acts taught in the Veda must ever be held to be most efficacious for ensuring happiness in this world and the next.

Are there any realms in the firmament or in heaven where I may enjoy the fruits of my religious merit? You possess knowledge of all such regions."' ॥ 1-88-6 ॥

    [य] यद अन्तरिक्षं पृथिवी दिशश च; यत तेजसा तपते भानुमांश च लॊकास तावन्तॊ दिवि संस्थिता वै; ते नान्तवन्तः परतिपालयन्ति ॥ १-८८-२ ॥[ya] yada antarikSaM pRthivI dizaza ca; yata tejasA tapate bhAnumAMza ca lòkAsa tAvantò divi saMsthitA vai; te nAntavantaH paratipAlayanti ॥ 1-88-2 ॥'Yayati answered, 'There are as many regions for thee to enjoy in heaven as the number of places in the firmament, the Earth and the ten points of the universe illumined by the Sun.'' ॥ 1-88-2 ॥

    यद वै नृशंसं तद अपथ्यम आहुर; यः सेवते धर्मम अनर्थबुद्धिः अस्वॊ ऽपय अनीशश च तथैव राजंस; तदार्जवं स समाधिस तदार्यम ॥ १-८७-४ ॥yada vai nRzaMsaM tada apathyama Ahura; yaH sevate dharmama anarthabuddhiH asvò 'paya anIzaza ca tathaiva rAjaMsa; tadArjavaM sa samAdhisa tadAryama ॥ 1-87-4 ॥'What is considered cruel, they say, is improper. He who serves righteousness with misguided intelligence, without self-control, and control over his senses, is indeed unjust. His equanimity is lost; his composure is shattered.' ॥ 1-87-4 ॥

    [आ] कथंस्विद वसतॊ ऽरण्ये गरामॊ भवति पृष्ठतः गरामे वा वसतॊ ऽरण्यं कथं भवति पृष्ठतः ॥ १-८६-१० ॥[A] kathaMsvida vasatò 'raNye garAmò bhavati pRSThataH garAme vA vasatò 'raNyaM kathaM bhavati pRSThataH ॥ 1-86-10 ॥'Ashtaka asked, "What exactly defines a Muni?" Yayati responded, "A Muni is one who retreats from all worldly attachments and resides in solitude within the forest."' ॥ 1-86-10 ॥

    तैर आख्याता भवतां यज्ञभूमिः; समीक्ष्य चैनां तवरितम उपागतॊ ऽसमि हविर गन्धं देशिकं यज्ञभूमेर; धूमापाङ्गं परतिगृह्य परतीतः ॥ १-८४-२१ ॥taira AkhyAtA bhavatAM yajJabhUmiH; samIkSya cainAM tavaritama upAgatò 'sami havira gandhaM dezikaM yajJabhUmera; dhUmApAGgaM paratigRhya paratItaH ॥ 1-84-21 ॥'They directed me to this holy sacrificial ground of yours. Witnessing the billowing smoke darkening the sky and inhaling the fragrance of ghee poured continuously into the fire, I am drawn toward your domain, filled with joy as I join you.' ॥ 1-84-21 ॥
