    मैत्रेय उवाच सेयं भगवतो माया यन्नयेन विरुध्यते । ईश्वरस्य विमुक्तस्य कार्पण्यमुत बन्धनम् ।। ३-७-९ ।।maitreya uvAca seyaM bhagavato mAyA yannayena virudhyate | Izvarasya vimuktasya kArpaNyamuta bandhanam || 3-7-9 ||Śrī Maitreya said: Certain conditioned souls put forward the theory that the Supreme Brahman, or the Personality of Godhead, is overcome by illusion, or māyā, and at the same time they maintain that He is unconditioned. This is against all logic. ।। 3-7-9 ।।

    एतस्मिन् मे मनो विद्वन्खिद्यतेऽज्ञानसङ्कटे । तन्नः पराणुद विभो कश्मलं मानसं महत् ।। ३-७-७ ।।etasmin me mano vidvankhidyate'jJAnasaGkaTe | tannaH parANuda vibho kazmalaM mAnasaM mahat || 3-7-7 ||O great and learned one, my mind is greatly illusioned by the distress of this nescience, and I therefore request you to clear it up. ।। 3-7-7 ।।

Why then do the living entities’ activities result in misfortune and misery? ।। 3-7-6 ।।

How then does he become engaged in nescience? ।। 3-7-5 ।।

By her He maintains the creation and conversely dissolves it, again and again. ।। 3-7-4 ।।

    क्रीडायामुद्यमोऽर्भस्य कामश्चिक्रीडिषान्यतः । स्वतस्तृप्तस्य च कथं निवृत्तस्य सदान्यतः ।। ३-७-३ ।।krIDAyAmudyamo'rbhasya kAmazcikrIDiSAnyataH | svatastRptasya ca kathaM nivRttasya sadAnyataH || 3-7-3 ||Boys are enthusiastic to play with other boys or with various diversions because they are encouraged by desire. But there is no possibility of such desire for the Lord because He is self-satisfied and detached from everything at all times. ।। 3-7-3 ।।

    विदुर उवाच ब्रह्मन् कथं भगवतश्चिन्मात्रस्याविकारिणः । लीलया चापि युज्येरन्निर्गुणस्य गुणाः क्रियाः ।। ३-७-२ ।।vidura uvAca brahman kathaM bhagavatazcinmAtrasyAvikAriNaH | lIlayA cApi yujyerannirguNasya guNAH kriyAH || 3-7-2 ||Śrī Vidura said: O great brāhmaṇa, since the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the complete spiritual whole and is unchangeable, how is He connected with the material modes of nature and their activities? If this is His pastime, how do the activities of the unchangeable take place and exhibit qualities without the modes of nature? ।। 3-7-2 ।।

    श्रीशुक उवाच एवं ब्रुवाणं मैत्रेयं द्वैपायनसुतो बुधः । प्रीणयन्निव भारत्या विदुरः प्रत्यभाषत ।। ३-७-१ ।।zrIzuka uvAca evaM bruvANaM maitreyaM dvaipAyanasuto budhaH | prINayanniva bhAratyA viduraH pratyabhASata || 3-7-1 ||Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King, while Maitreya, the great sage, was thus speaking, Vidura, the learned son of Dvaipāyana Vyāsa, expressed a request in a pleasing manner by asking this question. ।। 3-7-1 ।।

    यतोऽप्राप्य न्यवर्तन्त वाचश्च मनसा सह । अहं चान्य इमे देवास्तस्मै भगवते नमः ।। ३-६-४० ।।yato'prApya nyavartanta vAcazca manasA saha | ahaM cAnya ime devAstasmai bhagavate namaH || 3-6-40 ||Words, mind and ego, with their respective controlling demigods, have failed to achieve success in knowing the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, we simply have to offer our respectful obeisances unto Him as a matter of sanity. ।। 3-6-40 ।।
