    किन्तु शास्तृबहुत्वे स्याद्बहूनामिह कर्मिणाम् । शास्तृत्वमुपचारो हि यथा मण्डलवर्तिनाम् ॥ ६-३-६ ॥kintu zAstRbahutve syAdbahUnAmiha karmiNAm । zAstRtvamupacAro hi yathA maNDalavartinAm ॥ 6-3-6 ॥The Yamadūtas continued: Since there are many different karmīs, or workers, there may be different judges or rulers to give them justice, but just as one central emperor controls different departmental rulers, there must be one supreme controller to guide all the judges. ॥ 6-3-6 ॥

    यदि स्युर्बहवो लोके शास्तारो दण्डधारिणः । कस्य स्यातां न वा कस्य मृत्युश्चामृतमेव वा ॥ ६-३-५ ॥yadi syurbahavo loke zAstAro daNDadhAriNaH । kasya syAtAM na vA kasya mRtyuzcAmRtameva vA ॥ 6-3-5 ॥If in this universe there are many rulers and justices who disagree about punishment and reward, their contradictory actions will neutralize each other, and no one will be punished or rewarded. Otherwise, if their contradictory acts fail to neutralize each other, everyone will have to be both punished and rewarded. ॥ 6-3-5 ॥

    यमदूता ऊचुः कति सन्तीह शास्तारो जीवलोकस्य वै प्रभो । त्रैविध्यं कुर्वतः कर्म फलाभिव्यक्तिहेतवः ॥ ६-३-४ ॥yamadUtA UcuH kati santIha zAstAro jIvalokasya vai prabho । traividhyaM kurvataH karma phalAbhivyaktihetavaH ॥ 6-3-4 ॥The Yamadūtas said: Our dear lord, how many controllers or rulers are there in this material world? How many causes are responsible for manifesting the various results of activities performed under the three modes of material nature ॥ sattva-guṇa, rajo-guṇa and tamo-guṇa॥? ॥ 6-3-4 ॥

    श्रीशुक उवाच भगवत्पुरुषै राजन् याम्याः प्रतिहतोद्यमाः । पतिं विज्ञापयामासुर्यमं संयमनीपतिम् ॥ ६-३-३ ॥zrIzuka uvAca bhagavatpuruSai rAjan yAmyAH pratihatodyamAH । patiM vijJApayAmAsuryamaM saMyamanIpatim ॥ 6-3-3 ॥Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī replied: My dear King, when the order carriers of Yamarāja were baffled and defeated by the order carriers of Viṣṇu, they approached their master, the controller of Saṁyamanī-purī and master of sinful persons, to tell him of this incident. ॥ 6-3-3 ॥

    यमस्य देवस्य न दण्डभङ्गः कुतश्चनर्षे श्रुतपूर्व आसीत् । एतन्मुने वृश्चति लोकसंशयं न हि त्वदन्य इति मे विनिश्चितम् ॥ ६-३-२ ॥yamasya devasya na daNDabhaGgaH kutazcanarSe zrutapUrva AsIt । etanmune vRzcati lokasaMzayaM na hi tvadanya iti me vinizcitam ॥ 6-3-2 ॥O great sage, never before has it been heard anywhere that an order from Yamarāja has been baffled. Therefore I think that people will have doubts about this that no one but you can eradicate. Since that is my firm conviction, kindly explain the reasons for these events. ॥ 6-3-2 ॥

    राजोवाच निशम्य देवः स्वभटोपवर्णितं प्रत्याह किं तान् प्रति धर्मराजः । एवं हताज्ञो विहतान् मुरारेर्नैदेशिकैर्यस्य वशे जनोऽयम् ॥ ६-३-१ ॥rAjovAca nizamya devaH svabhaTopavarNitaM pratyAha kiM tAn prati dharmarAjaH । evaM hatAjJo vihatAn murArernaidezikairyasya vaze jano'yam ॥ 6-3-1 ॥King Parīkṣit said: O my lord, O Śukadeva Gosvāmī, Yamarāja is the controller of all living entities in terms of their religious and irreligious activities, but his order had been foiled. When his servants, the Yamadūtas, informed him of their defeat by the Viṣṇudūtas, who had stopped them from arresting Ajāmila, what did he reply? ॥ 6-3-1 ॥

    यद्यत्पश्यामि सर्वस्य ग्रहणं साधु रोचये । अवश्यं ग्रहणं रामो मन्येऽहं समुपैष्यति ॥ ३-७१-१७yadyatpazyAmi sarvasya grahaNaM sAdhu rocaye । avazyaM grahaNaM rAmo manye'haM samupaiSyati ॥ 3-71-17- I thought it was only proper to catch whatever creature I saw. Oh ! Rama, ( thought ) some day you would certainly come into my arms - ॥ 3-71-17॥

    छेत्स्यते समरे बाहू तदा स्वर्गं गमिष्यसि । अनेन वपुषा राम वनेऽस्मिन्राजसत्तम ॥ ३-७१-१६chetsyate samare bAhU tadA svargaM gamiSyasi । anena vapuSA rAma vane'sminrAjasattama ॥ 3-71-16- cuts off your arms in a fight, you would reach heaven.' Oh ! Rama, the best of kings, in this forest and with this body . - ॥ 3-71-16॥

    सिंहव्दिपमृगव्याघ्रान् भक्षयामि समन्ततः । स तु मामब्रवीदिन्द्रो यदा रामस्सलक्ष्मणः ॥ ३-७१-१५siMhavdipamRgavyAghrAn bhakSayAmi samantataH । sa tu mAmabravIdindro yadA rAmassalakSmaNaH ॥ 3-71-15- like lions, tigers, elephants and deer all over ( moving in the forest ) and ate them. Indra too had said, 'When Rama along with Lakshmana . - ॥ 3-71-15॥

    प्रादादास्यं च मे कुक्षौ तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रमकल्पयत् । सोऽहं भुजाभ्यां दीर्घाभ्यां संकृष्यास्मिन्वने चरान् ॥ ३-७१-१४prAdAdAsyaM ca me kukSau tIkSNadaMSTramakalpayat । so'haM bhujAbhyAM dIrghAbhyAM saMkRSyAsminvane carAn ॥ 3-71-14- and set my mouth with sharp teeth in the stomach. Stretching the long arms in the forest, I dragged moving creatures . - ॥ 3-71-14॥
