मारीचेन तु तद्वाक्यं क्षमं युक्तं च निशाचरः । उक्तो न प्रतिजग्राह मर्तुकाम इवौषधम् ॥ ३-४०-१
The demon Ravana did not heed the appropriate advice of the competent Maricha just like a man wishing to die refuses medicine. ॥ 3-40-1॥
english translation
mArIcena tu tadvAkyaM kSamaM yuktaM ca nizAcaraH । ukto na pratijagrAha martukAma ivauSadham ॥ 3-40-1
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतं पथ्यहितवक्तारं मारीचं राक्षसाधिपः । अब्रवीत्परुषं वाक्यमयुक्तं कालचोदितः ॥ ३-४०-२
The king of the demons, driven by fate, replied with improper and harsh words to Maricha whose advice was salutary and beneficial to him ॥ 3-40-2॥

taM pathyahitavaktAraM mArIcaM rAkSasAdhipaH । abravItparuSaM vAkyamayuktaM kAlacoditaH ॥ 3-40-2
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयत्किलैतदयुक्तार्थं मारीच मयि कथ्यते । वाक्यं निष्फलमत्यर्थमुप्तं बीजमिवोषरे ॥ ३-४०-३
- 'Oh ! Maricha, the words addressed to me are not appropriate.Your advice is extremely fruitless like a seed sown in saline, barren soil. ॥ 3-40-3॥

yatkilaitadayuktArthaM mArIca mayi kathyate । vAkyaM niSphalamatyarthamuptaM bIjamivoSare ॥ 3-40-3
hk transliteration by Sanscriptत्वद्वाक्यैर्न तु मां शक्यं भेत्तुं रामस्य संयुगे । पापशीलस्य मूर्खस्य मानुषस्य विशेषतः ॥ ३-४०-४
It is not possible to dissuade me from my encounter with Rama who is sinful, foolish and especially an ordinary human being. ॥ 3-40-4॥

tvadvAkyairna tu mAM zakyaM bhettuM rAmasya saMyuge । pApazIlasya mUrkhasya mAnuSasya vizeSataH ॥ 3-40-4
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयस्त्यक्त्वा सुहृदो राज्यं मातरं पितरं तथा । स्त्रीवाक्यं प्राकृतं श्रुत्वा वनमेकपदे गतः ॥ ३-४०-५
On hearing the casual words of a woman, (this) Rama came to the forest at once, leaving his friends, kingdom, mother and father. ॥ 3-40-5॥

yastyaktvA suhRdo rAjyaM mAtaraM pitaraM tathA । strIvAkyaM prAkRtaM zrutvA vanamekapade gataH ॥ 3-40-5
