यस्य भ्रात्रा कृतेयं दिक्छरण्या पुण्यकर्मणा । इह एकदा किल क्रूरो वातापिः अपि च इल्वलः । भ्रातरौ सहितौ आस्ताम् ब्राह्मणघ्नौ महा असुरौ ॥ ३-११-५६
- whose brother ( sage Agastya ) is with meritorious deeds and who made this southern region a liveable region). Once upon a time verily cruel demon brothers Vaataapi and Ilvala were here together and they the dreadful demons used to be Bhraman-killers. ॥ 3-11-56॥
english translation
yasya bhrAtrA kRteyaM dikcharaNyA puNyakarmaNA । iha ekadA kila krUro vAtApiH api ca ilvalaH । bhrAtarau sahitau AstAm brAhmaNaghnau mahA asurau ॥ 3-11-56
hk transliteration by Sanscriptधारयन् ब्राह्मणं रूपमिल्वलस्संस्कृतं वदन् । आमन्त्रयति विप्रान्स्मश्राद्धमुद्दिश्य निर्घृणः ॥ ३-११-५७
Assuming the form of a brahmin and using Sanskrit language, Ilvala would invite brahmins for offering shraddha to the dead. ॥ 3-11-57॥
english translation
dhArayan brAhmaNaM rUpamilvalassaMskRtaM vadan । Amantrayati viprAnsmazrAddhamuddizya nirghRNaH ॥ 3-11-57
hk transliteration by Sanscriptभ्रातरं संस्कृतं कृत्वा ततस्तं मेषरूपिणम् । तान् द्विजान्भोजयामास श्राद्धदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥ ३-११-५८
Ilvala would keep his brother sanctified, so that he is fit for offering, Then he would feed the brahmins with mutton according to the rituals. ॥ 3-11-58॥
english translation
bhrAtaraM saMskRtaM kRtvA tatastaM meSarUpiNam । tAn dvijAnbhojayAmAsa zrAddhadRSTena karmaNA ॥ 3-11-58
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततो भुक्तवतां तेषां विप्राणामिल्वलोऽब्रवीत् । वातापे निष्क्रमन्वेति स्वरेण महता वदन् ॥ ३-११-५९
Then when the brahmins finished eating, Ilvala would call aloud, 'Oh ! Vatapi come out'. ॥ 3-11-59॥

tato bhuktavatAM teSAM viprANAmilvalo'bravIt । vAtApe niSkramanveti svareNa mahatA vadan ॥ 3-11-59
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततो भ्रातुर्वचश्श्रुत्वा वातापिर्मेषवन्नदन् । भित्त्वा भित्त्वा शरीराणि ब्राह्मणानां विनिष्पतत् ॥ ३-११-६०
Then hearing his brother's voice, Vatapi would bleat like a sheep and jump out, tearing open the bodies of those brahmins. ॥ 3-11-60॥

tato bhrAturvacazzrutvA vAtApirmeSavannadan । bhittvA bhittvA zarIrANi brAhmaNAnAM viniSpatat ॥ 3-11-60
