[वै] ततॊ विराटं परथमं युधिष्ठिरॊ; राजा सभायाम उपविष्टुम आव्रजत वैडूर्य रूपान परतिमुच्य काञ्चनान; अक्षान स कक्षे परिगृह्य वाससा ।। ४-६-१ ।।

'[Vaiśampāyana said:] Then Yudhishthira, the king, was the first to enter the city of Virata and went to sit in the royal assembly. Having wrapped up dice that looked like sapphires (vaidūrya) and gold, he tucked them into the folds of his garment and approached (the king).' ।। 4-6-1 ।।

[vai] tatò virATaM parathamaM yudhiSThirò; rAjA sabhAyAma upaviSTuma Avrajata vaiDUrya rUpAna paratimucya kAJcanAna; akSAna sa kakSe parigRhya vAsasA || 4-6-1 ||

नराधिपॊ राष्ट्रपतिं यशस्विनं; महायशाः कौरव वंशवर्धनः महानुभावॊ नरराज सत्कृतॊ; दुरासदस तीक्ष्णविषॊ यथॊरगः ।। ४-६-२ ।।

'That illustrious lord of men—high-souled, the glorifier of the Kuru race, revered by kings, and irresistible in might, like a serpent with deadly venom.' ।। 4-6-2 ।।

narAdhipò rASTrapatiM yazasvinaM; mahAyazAH kaurava vaMzavardhanaH mahAnubhAvò nararAja satkRtò; durAsadasa tIkSNaviSò yathòragaH || 4-6-2 ||

बालेन रूपेण नरर्षभॊ महान; अथार्चि रूपेण यथामरस तथा महाभ्रजालैर इव संवृतॊ रविर; यथानलॊ भस्म वृतश च वीर्यवान ।। ४-६-३ ।।

'That bull among men, endowed with strength, beauty, and valor, possessing greatness, and bearing the form of a celestial, though now veiled like the sun by clouds or fire by ashes— first appeared when the renowned King Virata was seated in his court.' ।। 4-6-3 ।।

bAlena rUpeNa nararSabhò mahAna; athArci rUpeNa yathAmarasa tathA mahAbhrajAlaira iva saMvRtò ravira; yathAnalò bhasma vRtaza ca vIryavAna || 4-6-3 ||

तम आपतन्तं परसमीक्ष्य पाण्डवं; विराट राड इन्दुम इवाभ्रसंवृतम मन्त्रिद्विजान सूत मुखान विशस तथा; ये चापि के चित परिषत समासते पप्रच्छ कॊ ऽयं परथमं समेयिवान; अनेन यॊ ऽयं परसमीक्षते सभाम ।। ४-६-४ ।।

'And beholding that son of Pandu enter his court surrounded by his followers—he who looked like the moon veiled in clouds, with a face radiant as the full moon— King Virata turned to his counselors, Brahmanas, charioteers, Vaisyas, and others seated in the assembly and said: "Enquire who this man is—he who looks so much like a king, and who is now beholding my court for the first time."' ।। 4-6-4 ।।

tama ApatantaM parasamIkSya pANDavaM; virATa rADa induma ivAbhrasaMvRtama mantridvijAna sUta mukhAna vizasa tathA; ye cApi ke cita pariSata samAsate papraccha kò 'yaM parathamaM sameyivAna; anena yò 'yaM parasamIkSate sabhAma || 4-6-4 ||

न तु दविजॊ ऽयं भविता नरॊत्तमः; पतिः पृथिव्या इति मे मनॊगतम न चास्य दासॊ न रथॊ न कुण्डले; समीपतॊ भराजति चायम इन्द्रवत ।। ४-६-५ ।।

'He cannot be a Brahmana. I believe he is a foremost of men—a true lord of the earth. He has no attendants, no chariot, no elephants—yet he shines like Indra himself.' ।। 4-6-5 ।।
