तथा स शत्रून समरे विनिघ्नन; गाण्डीवधन्वा पुरुषप्रवीरः चचार संख्ये परदिशॊ दिशश च; दहन्न इवाग्निर वनम आतपान्ते ॥ ४-४९-१६ ॥
'And he, destroying enemies in battle, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, the hero among men, moved about in the battle in all directions, burning like fire consuming a forest at the end of summer.' ॥ 4-49-16 ॥
english translation
परकीर्णपर्णानि यथा वसन्ते; विशातयित्वात्यनिलॊ नुदन खे तथा सपत्नान विकिरन किरीटी; चचार संख्ये ऽति रथॊ रथेन ॥ ४-४९-१७ ॥
'Just as a mighty wind in spring, having dried up the scattered leaves, drives them about in the sky, so did the diademed one (Kirīṭī), scattering his enemies, move about in battle as a great chariot warrior with his chariot.' ॥ 4-49-17 ॥

शॊणाश्ववाहस्य हयान निहत्य; वैकर्तन भरातुर अदीनसत्त्वः एकेन संग्रामजितः शरेण; शिरॊ जहाराथ किरीटमाली ॥ ४-४९-१८ ॥
'Having slain the horses of the one who drove red horses, the undaunted one of noble spirit struck down Vaikartana's brother in battle with a single arrow and severed his head, he who wears the diadem.' ॥ 4-49-18 ॥

तस्मिन हते भरातरि सूतपुत्रॊ; वैकर्तनॊ वीर्यम अथाददानः परगृह्य दन्ताव इव नागराजॊ; महर्षभं वयाघ्र इवाभ्यधावत ॥ ४-४९-१९ ॥
'When that brother was slain, the son of the charioteer, Vaikartana, then displaying his valor, seizing his bow like the king of elephants takes up his tusks, rushed at the great bull-like hero like a tiger (attacking).' ॥ 4-49-19 ॥
english translation
स पाण्डवं दवादशभिः पृषत्कैर; वैकर्तनः शीघ्रम उपाजघान विव्याध गात्रेषु हयांश च सर्वान; विराट पुत्रं च शरैर निजघ्ने ॥ ४-४९-२० ॥
'That Vaikartana (Karna) swiftly struck the Pandava with twelve arrows, wounded all the horses on their limbs, and killed the son of Virata with arrows.' ॥ 4-49-20 ॥
