[भीस्म] अत्र या मामकी बुद्धिः शरूयतां यदि रॊचते कषिप्रं बलचतुर्भागं गृह्य गच्छ पुरं परति ततॊ ऽपरश चतुर्भागॊ गाः समादाय गच्छतु ।। ४-४७-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'Bhishma said: 'Hear my counsel, if it pleases you. I shall always speak for your welfare, O Kaurava. March immediately toward the capital with a quarter of our forces, while another quarter escorts the cattle to safety. With the remaining half of our army, we shall engage the Pandavas in battle.'' ।। 4-47-16 ।।

english translation

[bhIsma] atra yA mAmakI buddhiH zarUyatAM yadi ròcate kaSipraM balacaturbhAgaM gRhya gaccha puraM parati tatò 'paraza caturbhAgò gAH samAdAya gacchatu || 4-47-16 ||

वयं तव अर्धेन सैन्येन परतियॊत्स्याम पाण्डवम मत्स्यं वा पुनर आयातम अथ वापि शतक्रतुम ।। ४-४७-१७ ।।

sanskrit

'I, along with Drona, Karna, Ashvatthama, and Kripa, will stand firm against Vibhatsu, the king of Matsya, or even Indra himself should he advance upon us. Indeed, we shall resist any of these foes as steadfastly as a river bank withstands the surging waters of the sea.' ।। 4-47-17 ।।

english translation

vayaM tava ardhena sainyena paratiyòtsyAma pANDavama matsyaM vA punara AyAtama atha vApi zatakratuma || 4-47-17 ||

आचार्यॊ मध्यतस तिष्ठत्व अश्वत्थामा तु सव्यतः कृपः शारद्वतॊ धीमान पार्श्वं रक्षतु दक्षिणम ।। ४-४७-१८ ।।

sanskrit

'Addressing his commanders, he declared: 'O preceptor, take your position at the center of our formation. Let Ashvatthama hold the left flank, while the wise Kripa, son of Sharadvan, shall defend our right wing.'' ।। 4-47-18 ।।

AcAryò madhyatasa tiSThatva azvatthAmA tu savyataH kRpaH zAradvatò dhImAna pArzvaM rakSatu dakSiNama || 4-47-18 ||

अग्रतः सूतपुत्रस तु कर्णस तिष्ठतु दंशितः अहं सर्वस्य सैनस्य पश्चात सथास्यामि पालयन ।। ४-४७-१९ ।।

sanskrit

'Let Karna of the Suta lineage, armored for battle, command the vanguard. As for myself, I shall station in the rear, from where I can oversee and protect the entire army.' ।। 4-47-19 ।।

english translation

agrataH sUtaputrasa tu karNasa tiSThatu daMzitaH ahaM sarvasya sainasya pazcAta sathAsyAmi pAlayana || 4-47-19 ||
