[उत्तर] आस्थाय विपुलं वीर रथं सारथिना मया कतमं यास्यसे ऽनीकम उक्तॊ यास्याम्य अहं तवया ॥ ४-४०-१ ॥
'Uttara said: "O mighty hero, now that I am the charioteer of this great chariot, which part of the enemy’s host wilt thou penetrate? Give thy command, and I shall drive thee there."' ॥ 4-40-1 ॥

[अर्ज] परीतॊ ऽसमि पुरुषव्याघ्र न भयं विद्यते तव सर्वान नुदामि ते शत्रून रणे रणविशारद ॥ ४-४०-२ ॥
'Arjuna said: "I am pleased with thee, O tiger among men; thou hast no cause for fear. I shall rout all thy foes in battle, O mighty warrior."' ॥ 4-40-2 ॥

सवस्थॊ भव महाबुद्धे पश्य मां शत्रुभिः सह युध्यमानं विमर्दे ऽसमिन कुर्वाणं भैरवं महत ॥ ४-४०-३ ॥
'Be at ease, for I will accomplish great and terrible feats in the fray. Quickly bind all the quivers to my chariot, and bring me a sword of polished blade adorned with gold.' ॥ 4-40-3 ॥

एतान सर्वान उपासङ्गान कषिप्रं बध्नीहि मे रथे एतं चाहर निस्त्रिंशं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम अहं वै कुरुभिर यॊत्स्याम्य अवजेष्यामि ते पशून ॥ ४-४०-४ ॥
'Hearing Arjuna’s words, Uttara quickly shook off all hesitation. He swiftly climbed down from the tree, bringing with him Arjuna’s weapons. Arjuna then addressed him, saying, "Yes, I will fight the Kurus and recover your cattle."' ॥ 4-40-4 ॥

संकल्पपक्ष विक्षेपं बाहुप्राकारतॊरणम तरिदण्डतूण संबाधम अनेकध्वजसंकुलम ॥ ४-४०-५ ॥
'These my arms shall form its ramparts and gateways. This triple mast and my quiver will be the impregnable defenses no foe can breach. My banner—single and grand—shall stand equal to all the flags of thy city.' ॥ 4-40-5 ॥
