[बृहन] यन मां पूर्वम इहापृच्छः शत्रुसेनानिबर्हणम गाण्डीवम एतत पार्थस्य लॊकेषु विदितं धनुः ॥ ४-३८-३६ ॥
'Vrihannala said: “That which thou didst first enquire about is the bow of Arjuna—Gāṇḍīva—renowned throughout the world, a weapon capable of devastating entire enemy hosts."' ॥ 4-38-36 ॥
english translation
सर्वायुधमहामात्रं शातकुम्भपरिष्कृतम एतत तद अर्जुनस्यासीद गाण्डीवं परमायुधम ॥ ४-३८-३७ ॥
'Adorned with gold, this mighty bow, the greatest and most formidable of all weapons, belonged to Arjuna himself.' ॥ 4-38-37 ॥
english translation
यत तच छतसहस्रेण संमितं राष्ट्रवर्धनम येन देवान मनुष्यांश च पार्थॊ विषहते मृधे ॥ ४-३८-३८ ॥
'Alone, it equals a hundred thousand ordinary weapons in power, and ever aids in expanding the bounds of kingdoms. With this bow, Pārtha vanquishes in battle both mortals and celestials alike.' ॥ 4-38-38 ॥
english translation
देवदानवगन्धर्वैः पूजितं शाश्वतीः समाः एतद वर्षसहस्रं तु बरह्मा पूर्वम अधारयत ॥ ४-३८-३९ ॥
'Ever worshipped by the gods, the Dānavas, and the Gandharvas, and adorned with exquisite hues, this great and flawless bow is smooth, without knot or blemish anywhere. Śiva was its first bearer, holding it for a thousand years.' ॥ 4-38-39 ॥
english translation
ततॊ ऽनन्तरम एवाथ परजापतिर अधारयत तरीणि पञ्चशतं चैव शक्रॊ ऽशीति च पञ्च च ॥ ४-३८-४० ॥
'Thereafter, Prajāpati held it for five hundred and three years, and then Śakra (Indra) bore it for eighty-five years.' ॥ 4-38-40 ॥
