न चेद विजित्य गास तास तवं गृहान वै परतियास्यसि परहसिष्यन्ति वीर तवां नरा नार्यश च संगताः ॥ ४-३६-२१ ॥

'If you return home without recovering the kine, both valiant men and even women will mock you when they gather together.' ।। 4-36-21 ।।

english translation

na ceda vijitya gAsa tAsa tavaM gRhAna vai paratiyAsyasi parahasiSyanti vIra tavAM narA nAryaza ca saMgatAH ॥ 4-36-21 ॥

अहम अप्य अत्र सैरन्ध्र्या सतुतः सारथ्य कर्मणि न हि शक्ष्याम्य अनिर्जित्य गाः परयातुं पुरं परति ॥ ४-३६-२२ ॥

'As for myself, I cannot go back to the city empty-handed, not after the Sairindhri praised me so highly for my skill in driving. It is because of those words of hers—and yours as well—that I have come here.' ।। 4-36-22 ।।

ahama apya atra sairandhryA satutaH sArathya karmaNi na hi zakSyAmya anirjitya gAH parayAtuM puraM parati ॥ 4-36-22 ॥

सतॊत्रेण चैव सैरन्ध्र्यास तव वाक्येन तेन च कथं न युध्येयम अहं कुरून सर्वान सथिरॊ भव ॥ ४-३६-२३ ॥

'Praised by Sairindhri and urged by thy own words as well — how can I not fight with all the Kurus? So compose thyself and be still.' ।। 4-36-23 ।।

satòtreNa caiva sairandhryAsa tava vAkyena tena ca kathaM na yudhyeyama ahaM kurUna sarvAna sathirò bhava ॥ 4-36-23 ॥

[उत्तर] कामं हरन्तु मत्स्यानां भूयांसं कुरवॊ धनम परहसन्तु च मां नार्यॊ नरा वापि बृहन्नडे ॥ ४-३६-२४ ॥

'Uttara said: "Let the Kurus plunder the Matsyas of all their wealth. Let men and women, O Brihannala, laugh at me in scorn. Let the kine be lost, let the city be laid bare, let me face disgrace before my father himself—still, I say, there is no need for battle!"' ।। 4-36-24 ।।

[uttara] kAmaM harantu matsyAnAM bhUyAMsaM kuravò dhanama parahasantu ca mAM nAryò narA vApi bRhannaDe ॥ 4-36-24 ॥

[वै] इत्य उक्त्वा पराद्रवद भीतॊ रथात परस्कन्द्य कुण्डली तयक्त्वा मानं स मन्तात्मा विसृज्य स शरं धनुः ॥ ४-३६-२५ ॥

'Vaiśampāyana continued: Saying this, the frightened prince, adorned with earrings, leapt down from his chariot and fled—casting aside his bow and arrows, and abandoning both honor and pride.' ।। 4-36-25 ।।

[vai] itya uktvA parAdravada bhItò rathAta paraskandya kuNDalI tayaktvA mAnaM sa mantAtmA visRjya sa zaraM dhanuH ॥ 4-36-25 ॥
