[वै] तथा तौ कथयित्वा तु बाष्पम उत्सृज्य दुःखितौ रात्रिशेषं तद अत्युग्रं धारयाम आसतुर हृदा ॥ ४-२१-६ ॥

'Vaiśampāyana continued: Having thus spoken with one another and wept in sorrow, they spent the dreadful remainder of the night, waiting for the dawn in painful silence and restlessness.' ॥ 4-21-6 ॥

english translation

[vai] tathA tau kathayitvA tu bASpama utsRjya duHkhitau rAtrizeSaM tada atyugraM dhArayAma Asatura hRdA ॥ 4-21-6 ॥

तस्यां रात्र्यां वयतीतायां परातर उत्थाय कीचकः गत्वा राजकुलायैव दरौपदीम इदम अब्रवीत ॥ ४-२१-७ ॥

'And when the night had passed, Kichaka rose early in the morning, went to the palace, and approached Draupadi.' ॥ 4-21-7 ॥

english translation

tasyAM rAtryAM vayatItAyAM parAtara utthAya kIcakaH gatvA rAjakulAyaiva daraupadIma idama abravIta ॥ 4-21-7 ॥

सभायां पश्यतॊ राज्ञः पातयित्वा पदाहनम न चैवालभथास तराणम अभिपन्ना बलीयसा ॥ ४-२१-८ ॥

'In the royal court, I cast thee down and kicked thee—right before the eyes of the king. Struck by one as powerful as myself, thou couldst find no protector.' ॥ 4-21-8 ॥

sabhAyAM pazyatò rAjJaH pAtayitvA padAhanama na caivAlabhathAsa tarANama abhipannA balIyasA ॥ 4-21-8 ॥

परवादेन हि मत्स्यानां राजा नाम्नायम उच्यते अहम एव हि मत्स्यानां राजा वै वाहिनीपतिः ॥ ४-२१-९ ॥

'Virata is but king in name; it is I who wield the true power in the Matsya realm. I command this army—its strength is mine.' ॥ 4-21-9 ॥

paravAdena hi matsyAnAM rAjA nAmnAyama ucyate ahama eva hi matsyAnAM rAjA vai vAhinIpatiH ॥ 4-21-9 ॥

सा सुखं परतिपद्यस्व दासभीरु भवामि ते अह्नाय तव सुश्रॊणिशतं निष्कान ददाम्य अहम ॥ ४-२१-१० ॥

'Therefore, O timid one, accept me willingly. I shall become thy servant. O slender-waisted lady, I will forthwith bestow upon thee a hundred nishkas of gold.' ॥ 4-21-10 ॥

sA sukhaM paratipadyasva dAsabhIru bhavAmi te ahnAya tava suzròNizataM niSkAna dadAmya ahama ॥ 4-21-10 ॥
