अन्धान वृद्धांस तथानाथान सर्वान राष्ट्रेषु दुर्गतान बिभर्त्य अविमना नित्यम आनृशंस्याद युधिष्ठिरः ॥ ४-१७-२१ ॥
'Firm in resolve, unshaken in valor, and ever inclined to give each creature his due, Yudhishthira the righteous once supported, moved by compassion, the blind, the aged, the helpless, the orphaned, and all who suffered within his kingdom.' ॥ 4-17-21 ॥
english translation
andhAna vRddhAMsa tathAnAthAna sarvAna rASTreSu durgatAna bibhartya avimanA nityama AnRzaMsyAda yudhiSThiraH ॥ 4-17-21 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस एष निरयं पराप्तॊ मत्स्यस्य परिचारकः सभायां देविता राज्ञः कङ्कॊ बरूते युधिष्ठिरः ॥ ४-१७-२२ ॥
'But alas, that very Yudhishthira, now reduced to servitude, lives in the court of Matsya as a dependent, a humble caster of dice, known no longer by his royal name, but by the name 'Kanka'' ॥ 4-17-22 ॥
english translation
sa eSa nirayaM parAptò matsyasya paricArakaH sabhAyAM devitA rAjJaH kaGkò barUte yudhiSThiraH ॥ 4-17-22 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइन्द्रप्रस्थे निवसतः समये यस्य पार्थिवाः आसन बलिभृतः सर्वे सॊ ऽदयान्यैर भृतिम इच्छति ॥ ४-१७-२३ ॥
'He, unto whom all the rulers of the earth paid tribute in due season while he dwelt at Indraprastha—alas, that very Yudhishthira now seeks sustenance at another’s hands.' ॥ 4-17-23 ॥

indraprasthe nivasataH samaye yasya pArthivAH Asana balibhRtaH sarve sò 'dayAnyaira bhRtima icchati ॥ 4-17-23 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपार्थिवाः पृथिवीपाला यस्यासन वशवर्तिनः स वशे विवशॊ राजा परेषाम अद्य वर्तते ॥ ४-१७-२४ ॥
'He, before whom kings bowed in obedience—alas, that sovereign, having lost his own freedom, now lives in servitude.' ॥ 4-17-24 ॥

pArthivAH pRthivIpAlA yasyAsana vazavartinaH sa vaze vivazò rAjA pareSAma adya vartate ॥ 4-17-24 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरताप्य पृथिवीं सर्वां रश्मिवान इव तेजसा सॊ ऽयं राज्ञॊ विराटस्य सभा सतारॊ युधिष्ठिरः ॥ ४-१७-२५ ॥
'He who once shone upon the earth like the blazing sun with the brilliance of his virtues and power—alas, that Yudhishthira now serves as a mere courtier in the palace of King Virata.' ॥ 4-17-25 ॥

paratApya pRthivIM sarvAM razmivAna iva tejasA sò 'yaM rAjJò virATasya sabhA satArò yudhiSThiraH ॥ 4-17-25 ॥
