Hearing that roar and seeing the elephants engaged, Bhīṣma Śāṃtanava again addressed Bhāradvāja.

english translation

I do not approve of this engagement with the Haiḍimba, of harmful disposition—now empowered by strength and vigor and supported by allies.

english translation

He cannot be overcome in combat—even by the wielder of the thunderbolt himself. Once his aim is secured, he strikes with sure effect; and our mounts are fatigued. Moreover, throughout the day we have been wounded and worn down by the Pāñcālas and the Pāṇḍava forces.

english translation

This battle does not please me—to fight the Pāṇḍavas who have conquered Kāśi. Proclaim a withdrawal today; tomorrow we shall engage the foe again.

english translation

Hearing the grandsire’s words, the Kauravas acted accordingly. Distressed by fear of Ghaṭotkaca, they carried out a withdrawal by tactical means.
