Seeing Vṛkodara acting with formidable force, holding his great mace aloft, Bhīṣma immediately advanced toward him.

महता मेघघोषेण रथेनादित्यवर्चसा । छादयञ्शरवर्षेण पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान्॥६-५९-२२॥
On a chariot resounding like thunderclouds and radiant like the sun, he covered the field with a shower of arrows, like Parjanya the rain-bearer.

तमायान्तं तथा दृष्ट्वा व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् । भीष्मं भीमो महाबाहुः प्रत्युदीयादमर्षणः॥६-५९-२३॥
Seeing Bhīṣma advancing like Antaka, the End-Time power with mouth agape, mighty-armed Bhīma—who could not endure insult—stepped forward to meet him.

तस्मिन्क्षणे सात्यकिः सत्यसंधः शिनिप्रवीरोऽभ्यपतत्पितामहम् । निघ्नन्नमित्रान्धनुषा दृढेन स कम्पयंस्तव पुत्रस्य सेनाम्॥६-५९-२४॥
At that moment Sātyaki—true to his vow, foremost hero of the Śinis—rushed at the Grandsire; striking down foes with his firm bow, he shook the army of your son.

तं यान्तमश्वै रजतप्रकाशैः शरान्धमन्तं धनुषा दृढेन । नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं तदानीं सर्वे गणा भारत ये त्वदीयाः॥६-५९-२५॥
As he advanced with horses gleaming like silver, and with his firm bow darkened the sky with arrows, none of your forces, O Bhārata, were then able to restrain him.
