Then, by the diademed one’s sharpened torrents of arrows, there arose on that field of engagement a highly dreadful ‘river’—its water blood from weapon-inflicted wounds, its foam the bodies of men.

english translation

Rushing with force, broad in current, it flowed forth—terrifying in appearance and sound—obstructed by the bodies of fallen elephants and horses, with mire of flesh filled with human entrails and marrow.

english translation

Attended by hosts of rākṣasas and bhūtas, with ‘grass’ of hair and a confusion of heads and skulls, carrying thousands of heaps of bodies, it was crowded with ‘waves’ of shattered and varied armors.

english translation

With gravel of severed bones of men, horses, and elephants, like an underworld of destruction and fear-inducing, it was surrounded by flocks of herons and resounding vultures, as well as groups of carrion-eaters and hyenas.

english translation

On every side they beheld a cruel river, its banks close at hand, resembling the great Vaitaraṇī—set in motion by volleys of Arjuna’s arrows—terrifying, and flowing with fat, marrow, and blood.
