ततः कलिङ्गसैन्यानां प्रमुखे भरतर्षभ । श्रुतायुषमभिप्रेक्ष्य भीमसेनः समभ्ययात्॥६-५०-६१॥
Then, at the forefront of the Kaliṅga ranks, O bull of the Bharatas, Bhīmasena, beholding Śrutāyus, advanced to meet him.

तमायान्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य कलिङ्गो नवभिः शरैः । भीमसेनममेयात्मा प्रत्यविध्यत्स्तनान्तरे॥६-५०-६२॥
Seeing him approach, the Kaliṅga warrior—of immeasurable spirit—struck Bhīmasena with nine arrows in the region of the chest.

कलिङ्गबाणाभिहतस्तोत्त्रार्दित इव द्विपः । भीमसेनः प्रजज्वाल क्रोधेनाग्निरिवेन्धनैः॥६-५०-६३॥
Struck by the Kaliṅga arrows, Bhīmasena blazed with wrath—like an elephant tormented by the goad, or like fire made fiercer by fuel.

अथाशोकः समादाय रथं हेमपरिष्कृतम् । भीमं संपादयामास रथेन रथसारथिः॥६-५०-६४॥
Then Aśoka, the charioteer, brought a chariot adorned with gold and set Bhīma upon it.

तमारुह्य रथं तूर्णं कौन्तेयः शत्रुसूदनः । कलिङ्गमभिदुद्राव तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्॥६-५०-६५॥
Swiftly mounting that chariot, the son of Kuntī—subduer of foes—rushed at the Kaliṅga lord and cried, “Stand, stand!”
