For, upon seeing this tiger among men—bow in hand and of great strength—my forces have been driven into flight, struck by his missiles.

But Bhīṣma—of great radiance and great strength—cannot be overcome. In this plight, I feel submerged, without any means of crossing, in the deep waters that are Bhīṣma.

english translation

O Keśava—having come to face Bhīṣma, and through the weakness of my own judgment, O Govinda, I will go to the forest; it is better for me to live there.

But I cannot hand over these rulers of the earth to Bhīṣma for death. Bhīṣma, skilled in great weapons, will exhaust my army, O Kṛṣṇa.
