Drupada’s forces appeared as if scorched—like forests burned by fire at the end of winter, or as if burned in autumn; and Bhīṣma stood in the engagement like a smokeless flame.

english translation

Like the midday sun blazing with radiance, Bhīṣma was such that the Pāṇḍava warriors could not bear to look upon him.

english translation

Pressed by fear, those Pāṇḍavas looked about on every side; yet they found no protector—like cattle stricken by cold.

english translation

When the army was struck, scattered, dispirited, and hard-pressed, a great outcry arose among the forces of Pāṇḍu, O Bhārata.

english translation

Then Bhīṣma Śāṃtanava, ever wielding his circular-bending bow, loosed arrows with blazing points, like swift venomous serpents.
