When that tumultuous, hair-raising sound had arisen, the rumbling of chariots became like the thunderous reverberation of rain-clouds.

english translation

Fixing their minds in a harsh resolve, as if having relinquished concern for life, they all advanced against the Pāṇḍavas with their banners raised high.

english translation

Then Śāṃtanava (Bhīṣma) himself, O King, charged toward Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), seizing in battle a dreadful bow, like the staff of Kāla—Time inexorable.

english translation

Arjuna too, taking up the world-renowned bow Gāṇḍīva, the radiant one advanced toward Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma) at the forefront of the battle.

english translation

Those two tiger-like Kuru champions, each intent on bringing down the other, engaged: Gāṅgeya, though he struck Pārtha in battle, did not make the strong one waver; likewise, O King, the Pāṇḍava did not make Bhīṣma waver in the fight.
