When the Pāṇḍavas and the Dhārtarāṣṭras met in that vast massing, the great divisions trembled with the sounds of conches and mṛdaṅgas, like forests shaken by the wind.

english translation

As the kings, elephants, horses, and chariots pressed forward at an inauspicious moment, the armies’ roar grew tumultuous—like oceans driven into upheaval by the wind.

english translation

When that tumultuous, hair-raising sound arose, mighty-armed Bhīmasena let forth a forceful cry, like a powerful bull.

english translation

Bhīmasena’s roar rose above the blare of conches and kettledrums, above the trumpeting of elephants, and above the lion-like shouts of the troops.

english translation

Among the divisions, where thousands of horses were neighing, Bhīmasena’s resonance exceeded all other sounds.
