Arjuna said: O mighty-armed one, I wish to understand distinctly the true nature of saṃnyāsa and of tyāga, O Hṛṣīkeśa, O slayer of Keśin.

english translation

The Blessed Lord said: The wise understand saṃnyāsa as the laying aside of desire-motivated actions; the discerning declare tyāga to be the relinquishment of the fruits of all actions.

english translation

Some reflective thinkers say that action should be abandoned as defective; others say that acts of sacrifice, giving, and austerity should not be abandoned.

english translation

Hear from me the settled conclusion regarding tyāga, O best of the Bharatas; for tyāga, O tiger among men, has been described as threefold.

english translation

Acts of yajña (sacrifice), dāna (giving), and tapas (disciplined austerity) are not to be abandoned; they are to be performed. For sacrifice, giving, and austerity are purifying for reflective sages.
