A fearsome ocean of missiles—hard to approach—whose ‘sharks’ were arrows; whose ‘waves’ were bows; inexhaustible, without islands, and without a ford in the engagement; with whirlpools of maces and swords, seizing horses, and crowded with elephants.

english translation

In the engagement, he rapidly overwhelmed many horses, elephants, infantry, and chariots—one who deprived opposing heroes of their advantage.

english translation

As he blazed with anger and martial radiance—Bhīṣma, the afflicter of foes—what heroes formed a protective encirclement around him, as the shoreline encloses the ocean, the abode of makaras?

english translation

O Sañjaya, destroyer of foes—when Bhīṣma undertook his operations in the engagement for Duryodhana’s advantage, who then stood at his front?

english translation

Who protected the right wing of Bhīṣma of immeasurable radiance? And who—those eminent heroes of firm discipline—held position to his rear?
