Now we shall discourse on the Chapter which treats of the preparations and uses of the medicinal measures (external applications) to be adopted or employed in treating ocular affections in general.

One who is knowledgeable in the essence of all scriptures, who has a vision of profound spiritual insight, and who is endowed with a noble mind, The sage Kashyapa, the king of the Kashi dynasty, commanded his disciple, Vaishwamitra.

The practices of Tarpana, Puta-paka, Sekana, and the application of eye-drops and Anjana, Listen to me as I explain the details of these methods and their purpose.

संशुद्धदेहशिरसो जीर्णान्नस्य शुभे दिने । पूर्वाह्णे वाऽपराह्णे वा कार्यमक्ष्णोस्तु तर्पणम् ॥५॥
On an auspicious day, in the morning or afternoon, Tarpana should be performed for the eyes of a person with a purified body and head.
