The nine types of eye diseases that are amenable to scarification have been described. The general procedure for treating these diseases is as follows: The patient should be laid in a chamber that is shielded from the sun and wind.

(आप्तैर्दृढं गृहीतस्य वेश्मन्युत्तानशायिनः) | सुखोदकप्रतप्तेन वाससा सुसमाहितः | स्वेदयेद्वर्त्म निर्भुज्य वामाङ्गुष्ठाङ्गुलिस्थितम् ||४||

(For a patient who is firmly held by experienced practitioners, lying on a raised bed, wearing suitable clothing, and having undergone proper preparatory treatments) The eye should be fomented by rubbing the affected part with the left thumb and index finger, applying a piece of linen soaked in warm water, while keeping the area steady and focused.

अङ्गुल्यङ्गुष्ठकाभ्यां तु नि र्भुग्नं वर्त्म यत्नतः | प्लोतान्तराभ्यां न यथा चलति स्रंसतेऽपि वा ||५||
