उशीनरेन्द्रं विधिना तथा कृतं पतिं महिष्यः प्रसमीक्ष्य दुःखिताः । हताः स्म नाथेति करैरुरो भृशं घ्नन्त्यो मुहुस्तत्पदयोरुपापतन् ॥ ७-२-३१ ॥
When the queens of the King of Uśīnara saw their husband lying in that position, they began crying, “O lord, now that you have been killed, we also have been killed.” Repeating these words again and again, they fell down, pounding their breasts, at the feet of the dead King. ॥ 7-2-31 ॥

जब उशीनर के राजा की रानियों ने अपने पति को इस स्थिति में पड़े देखा तो वे रोने लगीं—“हे नाथ, तुम्हारे मारे जाने से हम भी मारी जा चुकी हैं।” इन शब्दों को टेर-टेर कर वे अपनी छाती पीट-पीट कर मृत राजा के चरणों पर गिर पड़ीं। ॥ ७-२-३१ ॥

रुदत्य उच्चैर्दयिताङ्घ्रिपङ्कजं सिञ्चन्त्य अस्रैः कुचकुङ्कुमारुणैः । विस्रस्तकेशाभरणाः शुचं नृणां सृजन्त्य आक्रन्दनया विलेपिरे ॥ ७-२-३२ ॥
As the queens loudly cried, their tears glided down their breasts, becoming reddened by kuṅkuma powder, and fell upon the lotus feet of their husband. Their hair became disarrayed, their ornaments fell, and in a way that evoked sympathy from the hearts of others, the queens began lamenting their husband’s death. ॥ 7-2-32 ॥

रानियों के उच्च स्वर में रोने पर उनके आँसू वक्षस्थल पर लुढक़ आये जहाँ वे कुमकुम चूर्ण से लाल होकर फिर उनके पति के चरणकमलों पर गिर पड़े। उनके केश बिखर गये, उनके आभूषण गिर गये और अन्यों के हृदय से सहानुभूति जगाती हुई रानियाँ अपने पति की मृत्यु पर शोक करने लगीं। ॥ ७-२-३२ ॥

अहो विधात्राकरुणेन नः प्रभो भवान् प्रणीतो दृगगोचरां दशाम् । उशीनराणामसि वृत्तिदः पुरा कृतोऽधुना येन शुचां विवर्धनः ॥ ७-२-३३ ॥
O lord, you have now been removed by cruel providence to a state beyond our sight. You had previously sustained the livelihood of the inhabitants of Uśīnara, and thus they were happy, but your condition now is the cause of their unhappiness. ॥ 7-2-33 ॥
english translation
हे नाथ, अब आप क्रूर विधाता द्वारा हमारी दृष्टि से ओझल कर लिये गये हैं। इसके पूर्व आप उशीनर के निवासियों को जीविका प्रदान करते थे जिससे वे सुखी थे, किन्तु अब आपकी दशा उनके दुख का कारण बनी है। ॥ ७-२-३३ ॥

त्वया कृतज्ञेन वयं महीपते कथं विना स्याम सुहृत्तमेन ते । तत्रानुयानं तव वीर पादयोः शुश्रूषतीनां दिश यत्र यास्यसि ॥ ७-२-३४ ॥
O King, O hero, you were a very grateful husband and the most sincere friend of all of us. How shall we exist without you? O hero, wherever you are going, please direct us there so that we may follow in your footsteps and engage again in your service. Let us go along with you! ॥ 7-2-34 ॥

हे राजा, हे वीर, आप अत्यन्त कृतज्ञ पति थे और हम सबों के अत्यन्त निष्ठावान् मित्र थे। आपके बिना हम कैसे रह सकेंगी? हे वीर, आप जहाँ भी जा रहे हैं, कृपा करके हमारा निर्देशन करें जिससे हम आपके पदचिन्हों का अनुसरण कर सकें और पुन: आपकी सेवा कर सकें। हमें भी अपने साथ ले चलें। ॥ ७-२-३४ ॥

एवं विलपतीनां वै परिगृह्य मृतं पतिम् । अनिच्छतीनां निर्हारमर्कोऽस्तं सन्न्यवर्तत ॥ ७-२-३५ ॥
The time was appropriate for the body to be burned, but the queens, not allowing it to be taken away, continued lamenting for the dead body, which they kept on their laps. In the meantime, the sun completed its movements for setting in the west. ॥ 7-2-35 ॥

यद्यपि शव-दाह के लिए समय उपयुक्त था लेकिन रानियाँ शव को अपनी गोद में लिए हुए विलाप करती रहीं और उन्होंने शव को ले जाने की अनुमति नहीं दी। तभी सूर्य पश्चिम दिशा में अस्त हो गया। ॥ ७-२-३५ ॥
