श्रीशुक उवाच राज्ञस्तद्वच आकर्ण्य नारदो भगवानृषिः । तुष्टः प्राह तमाभाष्य शृण्वत्यास्तत्सदः कथाः ॥ ७-१-२१ ॥
Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: After hearing the request of Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira, Nārada Muni, the most powerful spiritual master, who knew everything, was very pleased. Thus he replied in the presence of everyone taking part in the yajña. ॥ 7-1-21 ॥

श्री शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : महाराज युधिष्ठिर की विनती सुनकर अत्यन्त शक्तिशाली गुरु नारद मुनि अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुए, क्योंकि वे हर बात को जानने वाले हैं। इस तरह उन्होंने यज्ञ में भाग लेने वाले सभी व्यक्तियों के समक्ष उत्तर दिया। ॥ ७-१-२१ ॥

नारद उवाच निन्दनस्तवसत्कारन्यक्कारार्थं कलेवरम् । प्रधानपरयो राजन्नविवेकेन कल्पितम् ॥ ७-१-२२ ॥
The great sage Śrī Nāradajī said: O King, blasphemy and praise, chastisement and respect, are experienced because of ignorance. The body of the conditioned soul is planned by the Lord for suffering in the material world through the agency of the external energy. ॥ 7-1-22 ॥

महर्षि नारद ने कहा : हे राजन्, निन्दा तथा स्तुति, अपमान तथा सम्मान का अनुभव अज्ञान के कारण होता है। बद्धजीव का शरीर भगवान् द्वारा अपनी बहिरंगा शक्ति के माध्यम से इस जगत में कष्ट भोगने के लिए बनाया गया है। ॥ ७-१-२२ ॥

हिंसा तदभिमानेन दण्डपारुष्ययोर्यथा । वैषम्यमिह भूतानां ममाहमिति पार्थिव ॥ ७-१-२३ ॥
My dear King, the conditioned soul, being in the bodily conception of life, considers his body to be his self and considers everything in relationship with the body to be his. Because he has this wrong conception of life, he is subjected to dualities like praise and chastisement. ॥ 7-1-23 ॥

हे राजन्, देहात्म-बुद्धि के कारण बद्धजीव अपने शरीर को ही आत्मा मान लेता है और अपने शरीर से सम्बद्ध हर वस्तु को अपनी मानता है। चूँकि उसे जीवन की यह मिथ्या धारणा रहती है, अतएव उसे प्रशंसा तथा अपमान जैसे द्वंद्वों को भोगना पड़ता है। ॥ ७-१-२३ ॥

यन्निबद्धोऽभिमानोऽयं तद्वधात्प्राणिनां वधः । तथा न यस्य कैवल्यादभिमानोऽखिलात्मनः । परस्य दमकर्तुर्हि हिंसा केनास्य कल्प्यते ॥ ७-१-२४ ॥
Because of the bodily conception of life, the conditioned soul thinks that when the body is annihilated the living being is annihilated. Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the supreme controller, the Supersoul of all living entities. Because He has no material body, He has no false conception of “I and mine.” It is therefore incorrect to think that He feels pleasure or pain when blasphemed or offered prayers. This is impossible for Him. Thus He has no enemy and no friend. When He chastises the demons it is for their good, and when He accepts the prayers of the devotees it is for their good. He is affected neither by prayers nor by blasphemy. ॥ 7-1-24 ॥

देहात्मा-बुद्धि के कारण बद्धजीव सोचता है कि जब शरीर नष्ट हो जाता है, तो जीव नष्ट हो जाता है। भगवान् विष्णु ही परम नियन्ता तथा समस्त जीवों के परमात्मा हैं। चूँकि उनका कोई भौतिक शरीर नहीं होता, अतएव उनमें “मैं तथा मेरा” जैसी भ्रान्त धारणा नहीं होती। अतएव यह सोचना सही नहीं है कि जब उनकी निन्दा की जाती है या उनकी स्तुति की जाती है, तो वे पीड़ा या हर्ष का अनुभव करते हैं। ऐसा कर पाना उनके लिए असम्भव है। इस प्रकार उनका न कोई शत्रु है और न कोई मित्र। जब वे असुरों को दण्ड देते हैं, तो उनकी भलाई के लिए ऐसा करते हैं और जब भक्तों की स्तुतियाँ स्वीकार करते हैं, तो वह उनके कल्याण के लिए होता है। वे न तो स्तुतियों से प्रभावित होते हैं न निन्दा से। ॥ ७-१-२४ ॥

तस्माद्वैरानुबन्धेन निर्वैरेण भयेन वा । स्नेहात्कामेन वा युञ्ज्यात्कथञ्चिन्नेक्षते पृथक् ॥ ७-१-२५ ॥
Therefore by enmity or by devotional service, by fear, by affection or by lusty desire — by all of these or any one of them — if a conditioned soul somehow or other concentrates his mind upon the Lord, the result is the same, for the Lord, because of His blissful position, is never affected by enmity or friendship. ॥ 7-1-25 ॥

अतएव यदि कोई बद्धजीव किसी तरह शत्रुता या भक्ति, भय, स्नेह या विषयवासना द्वारा—इनमें से सभी या किसी एक के द्वारा—अपने मन को भगवान् पर केन्द्रित करता है, तो परिणाम एक सा मिलता है, क्योंकि अपनी आनन्दमयी स्थिति के कारण भगवान् कभी भी शत्रुता या मित्रता द्वारा प्रभावित नहीं होते। ॥ ७-१-२५ ॥
