श्रुतेन तपसा वा किं वचोभिश्चित्तवृत्तिभिः । बुद्ध्या वा किं निपुणया बलेनेन्द्रियराधसा ।। ४-३१-११ ।।

sanskrit

Without devotional service, what is the meaning of severe austerities, the process of hearing, the power of speech, the power of mental speculation, elevated intelligence, strength, and the power of the senses? ।। 4-31-11 ।।

english translation

भक्ति के बिना कठिन तपस्या, सुनने, बोलने की शक्ति, चिन्तन शक्ति, उच्च ज्ञान, बल तथा इन्द्रियों की शक्ति का कोई अर्थ नहीं रह जाता। ।। ४-३१-११ ।।

किं वा योगेन साङ्ख्येन न्यासस्वाध्याययोरपि । किं वा श्रेयोभिरन्यैश्च न यत्रात्मप्रदो हरिः ।। ४-३१-१२ ।।

sanskrit

Transcendental practices that do not ultimately help one realize the Supreme Personality of Godhead are useless, be they mystic yoga practices, the analytical study of matter, severe austerity, the acceptance of sannyāsa, or the study of Vedic literature. All these may be very important aspects of spiritual advancement, but unless one understands the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, all these processes are useless. ।। 4-31-12 ।।

english translation

जो दिव्य विधिविधान पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् का साक्षात्कार कराने में सहायक नहीं होते, वे व्यर्थ हैं, चाहे वह योगाभ्यास हो या पदार्थ का वैश्लेषिक अध्ययन, कठिन तपस्या, संन्यास ग्रहण करना या कि वैदिक साहित्य का अध्ययन हो। भले ही ये आध्यात्मिक प्रगति के महत्त्वपूर्ण पक्ष क्यों न हों, किन्तु जब तक कोई भगवान् हरि को नहीं जान लेता ये सारी विधियाँ व्यर्थ हैं। ।। ४-३-१२ ।।

श्रेयसामपि सर्वेषामात्मा ह्यवधिरर्थतः । सर्वेषामपि भूतानां हरिरात्माऽऽत्मदः प्रियः ।। ४-३१-१३ ।।

sanskrit

Factually the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the original source of all self-realization. Consequently, the goal of all auspicious activities — karma, jñāna, yoga and bhakti — is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. ।। 4-31-13 ।।

english translation

यथार्थ रूप में भगवान् ही समस्त आत्म-साक्षात्कार के मूल स्रोत हैं। फलत: समस्त शुभ कार्यों—कर्म, ज्ञान, योग तथा भक्ति—का लक्ष्य भगवान् हैं। ।। ४-३१-१३ ।।

यथा तरोर्मूलनिषेचनेन तृप्यन्ति तत्स्कन्धभुजोपशाखाः । प्राणोपहाराच्च यथेन्द्रियाणां तथैव सर्वार्हणमच्युतेज्या ।। ४-३१-१४ ।।

As pouring water on the root of a tree energizes the trunk, branches, twigs and everything else, and as supplying food to the stomach enlivens the senses and limbs of the body, simply worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead through devotional service automatically satisfies the demigods, who are parts of that Supreme Personality. ।। 4-31-14 ।।

english translation

जिस तरह वृक्ष की जड़ को सींचने से तना, शाखाएँ तथा टहनियाँ पुष्ट होती हैं और जिस तरह पेट को भोजन देने से शरीर की इन्द्रियाँ तथा अंग प्राणवान् बनते हैं उसी प्रकार भक्ति द्वारा भगवान् की पूजा करने से भगवान् के ही अंग रूप सभी देवता स्वत: तुष्ट हो जाते हैं। ।। ४-३१-१४ ।।

यथैव सूर्यात्प्रभवन्ति वारः पुनश्च तस्मिन् प्रविशन्ति काले । भूतानि भूमौ स्थिरजङ्गमानि तथा हरावेव गुणप्रवाहः ।। ४-३१-१५ ।।

sanskrit

During the rainy season, water is generated from the sun, and in due course of time, during the summer season, the very same water is again absorbed by the sun. Similarly, all living entities, moving and inert, are generated from the earth, and again, after some time, they all return to the earth as dust. Similarly, everything emanates from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and in due course of time everything enters into Him again. ।। 4-31-15 ।।

english translation

वर्षा काल में सूर्य से जल उत्पन्न होता है और कालक्रम में अर्थात् ग्रीष्मकाल में वही जल सूर्य द्वारा पुन: सोख लिया जाता है। इसी प्रकार समस्त चर तथा अचर जीव इस पृथ्वी से उत्पन्न होते हैं और कुछ काल के पश्चात् वे पुन: पृथ्वी में धूल के रूप में मिल जाते हैं। इसी प्रकार से प्रत्येक वस्तु श्रीभगवान् से उद्भूत होती है और कालक्रम से पुन: उन्हीं में लीन हो जाती है। ।। ४-३१-१५ ।।
