किं वा योगेन साङ्ख्येन न्यासस्वाध्याययोरपि । किं वा श्रेयोभिरन्यैश्च न यत्रात्मप्रदो हरिः ।। ४-३१-१२ ।।

Transcendental practices that do not ultimately help one realize the Supreme Personality of Godhead are useless, be they mystic yoga practices, the analytical study of matter, severe austerity, the acceptance of sannyāsa, or the study of Vedic literature. All these may be very important aspects of spiritual advancement, but unless one understands the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, all these processes are useless. ।। 4-31-12 ।।

english translation

जो दिव्य विधिविधान पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् का साक्षात्कार कराने में सहायक नहीं होते, वे व्यर्थ हैं, चाहे वह योगाभ्यास हो या पदार्थ का वैश्लेषिक अध्ययन, कठिन तपस्या, संन्यास ग्रहण करना या कि वैदिक साहित्य का अध्ययन हो। भले ही ये आध्यात्मिक प्रगति के महत्त्वपूर्ण पक्ष क्यों न हों, किन्तु जब तक कोई भगवान् हरि को नहीं जान लेता ये सारी विधियाँ व्यर्थ हैं। ।। ४-३-१२ ।।
