तन्नो भवानीहतु रातवेऽन्नं क्षुधार्दितानां नरदेवदेव । यावन्न नङ्क्ष्यामह उज्झितोर्जा वार्तापतिस्त्वं किल लोकपालः ॥ ४-१७-११ ॥
Therefore we have all come to you for protection. You are not only a king, but the incarnation of God as well. Indeed, you are the king of all kings. You can give us all kinds of occupational engagements, for you are the master of our livelihood. Therefore, O king of all kings, please arrange to satisfy our hunger by the proper distribution of food grains. Please take care of us, lest we soon die for want of food. ॥ 4-17-11 ॥
english translation
अत: हम सभी आपके संरक्षण में आये हैं। आप केवल राजा ही नहीं हैं, आप भगवान् के अवतार भी हैं। वास्तविक रूप में आप राजाओं के राजा हैं। आप हमें सभी प्रकार की जीविकाएँ प्रदान कर सकते हैं, क्योंकि आप हमारी जीविका के स्वामी हैं। अत: हे राजराजेश्वर, उचित अन्न वितरण के द्वारा हमारी भूख को शान्त करने की व्यवस्था कीजिये। आप हमारी रक्षा करें जिससे हम अन्न के अभाव से मरें नहीं। ॥ ४-१७-११ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptमैत्रेय उवाच पृथुः प्रजानां करुणं निशम्य परिदेवितम् । दीर्घं दध्यौ कुरुश्रेष्ठ निमित्तं सोऽन्वपद्यत ॥ ४-१७-१२ ॥
After hearing this lamentation and seeing the pitiable condition of the citizens, King Pṛthu contemplated this matter for a long time to see if he could find out the underlying causes. ॥ 4-17-12 ॥

नागरिकों के इस शोकालाप को सुनकर तथा उनकी दयनीय स्थिति देखकर राजा ने दीर्घकाल तक इस विषय पर विचार किया कि क्या वह मूलभूत कारणों को खोज सकता है? ॥ ४-१७-१२ ॥

maitreya uvAca pRthuH prajAnAM karuNaM nizamya paridevitam । dIrghaM dadhyau kuruzreSTha nimittaM so'nvapadyata ॥ 4-17-12 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइति व्यवसितो बुद्ध्या प्रगृहीतशरासनः । सन्दधे विशिखं भूमेः क्रुद्धस्त्रिपुरहा यथा ॥ ४-१७-१३ ॥
Having arrived at a conclusion, the King took up his bow and arrow and aimed them at the earth, exactly like Lord Śiva, who destroys the whole world out of anger. ॥ 4-17-13 ॥

ऐसा निश्चय करके, राजा ने अपना धनुष-बाण उठाया और उन्हें पृथ्वी की ओर उसी प्रकार लक्षित किया जिस प्रकार शिवजी क्रोध से सारे जगत का विनाश कर देते हैं। ॥ ४-१७-१३ ॥

iti vyavasito buddhyA pragRhItazarAsanaH । sandadhe vizikhaM bhUmeH kruddhastripurahA yathA ॥ 4-17-13 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptप्रवेपमाना धरणी निशाम्योदायुधं च तम् । गौः सत्यपाद्रवद्भीता मृगीव मृगयुद्रुता ॥ ४-१७-१४ ॥
When the earth saw that King Pṛthu was taking his bow and arrow to kill her, she became very much afraid and began to tremble. She then began to flee, exactly like a deer, which runs very swiftly when followed by a hunter. Being afraid of King Pṛthu, she took the shape of a cow and began to run. ॥ 4-17-14 ॥

जब पृथ्वी ने देखा कि राजा पृथु उसे मारने के लिए धनुष-बाण धारण कर रहे हैं, तो वह भय के मारे काँपने लगी। उसके बाद वह उसी प्रकार भागी जिस प्रकार शिकारी द्वारा पीछा किये जाने पर हिरनी तेजी से भागती है। राजा के भय से पृथ्वी ने गाय का रूप धारण कर लिया और भागने लगी। ॥ ४-१७-१४ ॥

pravepamAnA dharaNI nizAmyodAyudhaM ca tam । gauH satyapAdravadbhItA mRgIva mRgayudrutA ॥ 4-17-14 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतामन्वधावत्तद्वैन्यः कुपितोऽत्यरुणेक्षणः । शरं धनुषि सन्धाय यत्र यत्र पलायते ॥ ४-१७-१५ ॥
Seeing this, Mahārāja Pṛthu became very angry, and his eyes became as red as the early-morning sun. Placing an arrow on his bow, he chased the cow-shaped earth wherever she would run. ॥ 4-17-15 ॥

यह देखकर महाराज पृथु अत्यन्त क्रुद्ध हुए और उनकी आँखें प्रात:कालीन सूर्य की भाँति लाल-लाल हो गईं। अपने धनुष पर बाण चढ़ाये वे जहाँ-जहाँ गोरूप पृथ्वी दौडक़र जाती, वहीं-वहीं उसका पीछा करते रहे। ॥ ४-१७-१५ ॥

tAmanvadhAvattadvainyaH kupito'tyaruNekSaNaH । zaraM dhanuSi sandhAya yatra yatra palAyate ॥ 4-17-15 ॥
