मैत्रेय उवाच एवं स भगवान् वैन्यः ख्यापितो गुणकर्मभिः । छन्दयामास तान् कामैः प्रतिपूज्याभिनन्द्य च ।। ४-१७-१ ।।

sanskrit

The great sage Maitreya continued: In this way the reciters who were glorifying Mahārāja Pṛthu readily described his qualities and chivalrous activities. At the end, Mahārāja Pṛthu offered them various presentations with all due respect and worshiped them adequately. ।। 4-17-1 ।।

english translation

मैत्रेय ऋषि ने आगे कहा : इस प्रकार उन गायकों ने जो महाराज पृथु की महिमा का गायन कर रहे थे, उनके गुणों तथा वीरतापूर्ण कार्यों का वर्णन किया। अन्त में महाराज पृथु ने सम्मानपूर्वक उन्हें अनेक भेंटें प्रदान कीं और उनकी यथेष्ट पूजा की। ।। ४-१७-१ ।।

ब्राह्मणप्रमुखान् वर्णान् भृत्यामात्यपुरोधसः । पौरान् जानपदान् श्रेणीः प्रकृतीः समपूजयत् ।। ४-१७-२ ।।

sanskrit

King Pṛthu thus satisfied and offered all respect to all the leaders of the brāhmaṇas and other castes, to his servants, to his ministers and to the priests, citizens, general countrymen, people from other communities, admirers and others, and thus they all became happy. ।। 4-17-2 ।।

english translation

इस प्रकार राजा पृथु ने ब्राह्मण तथा अन्य जातियों के समस्त नायकों, अपने नौकरों, मंत्रियों, पुरोहितों, नागरिकों, सामान्य देशवासियों, अन्य जाति के लोगों, प्रशंसकों तथा अन्यों को प्रसन्न किया और उनका सभी प्रकार से सम्मान किया। इस प्रकार वे सभी अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हो गये। ।। ४-१७-२ ।।

विदुर उवाच कस्माद्दधार गोरूपं धरित्री बहुरूपिणी । यां दुदोह पृथुस्तत्र को वत्सो दोहनं च किम् ।। ४-१७-३ ।।

sanskrit

Vidura inquired from the great sage Maitreya: My dear brāhmaṇa, since mother earth can appear in different shapes, why did she take the shape of a cow? And when King Pṛthu milked her, who became the calf, and what was the milking pot? ।। 4-17-3 ।।

english translation

विदुर ने मैत्रेय ऋषि से पूछा : हे ब्राह्मण, जब धरती माता अनेक रूप धारण कर सकती है, तो फिर उसने गाय का ही रूप क्यों ग्रहण किया? और जब राजा पृथु ने उसको दुहा तो कौन बछड़ा बना और दुहने का पात्र क्या था? ।। ४-१७-३ ।।

प्रकृत्या विषमा देवी कृता तेन समा कथम् । तस्य मेध्यं हयं देवः कस्य हेतोरपाहरत् ।। ४-१७-४ ।।

sanskrit

The surface of the earth is by nature low in some places and high in others. How did King Pṛthu level the surface of the earth, and why did the King of heaven, Indra, steal the horse meant for the sacrifice? ।। 4-17-4 ।।

english translation

पृथ्वी की सतह स्वभावत: कहीं ऊँची है, तो कहीं नीची। तो फिर राजा पृथु ने पृथ्वी की सतह को कैसे समतल बनाया, और स्वर्ग के राजा इन्द्र ने यज्ञ के घोड़े को क्यों चुराया? ।। ४-१७-४ ।।

prakRtyA viSamA devI kRtA tena samA katham | tasya medhyaM hayaM devaH kasya hetorapAharat || 4-17-4 ||

सनत्कुमाराद्भगवतो ब्रह्मन् ब्रह्मविदुत्तमात् । लब्ध्वा ज्ञानं सविज्ञानं राजर्षिः कां गतिं गतः ।। ४-१७-५ ।।

sanskrit

The great saintly King, Mahārāja Pṛthu, received knowledge from Sanat-kumāra, who was the greatest Vedic scholar. After receiving knowledge to be applied practically in his life, how did the saintly King attain his desired destination? ।। 4-17-5 ।।

english translation

महान् साधु राजा, महाराज पृथु, ने परम वैदिक विद्वान सनत्कुमार से ज्ञान प्राप्त किया। अपने जीवन में इस ज्ञान को व्यवहृत करने के लिए ज्ञान प्राप्त करके उस राजा ने इच्छित गंतव्य किस प्रकार प्राप्त किया? ।। ४-१७-५ ।।
