विदुर उवाच कस्माद्दधार गोरूपं धरित्री बहुरूपिणी । यां दुदोह पृथुस्तत्र को वत्सो दोहनं च किम् ।। ४-१७-३ ।।

sanskrit

Vidura inquired from the great sage Maitreya: My dear brāhmaṇa, since mother earth can appear in different shapes, why did she take the shape of a cow? And when King Pṛthu milked her, who became the calf, and what was the milking pot? ।। 4-17-3 ।।

english translation

विदुर ने मैत्रेय ऋषि से पूछा : हे ब्राह्मण, जब धरती माता अनेक रूप धारण कर सकती है, तो फिर उसने गाय का ही रूप क्यों ग्रहण किया? और जब राजा पृथु ने उसको दुहा तो कौन बछड़ा बना और दुहने का पात्र क्या था? ।। ४-१७-३ ।।
