Srimad Bhagavatam
तदस्य संसृतिर्बन्धः पारतन्त्र्यं च तत्कृतम् । भवत्यकर्तुरीशस्य साक्षिणो निर्वृतात्मनः ॥ ३-२६-७ ।।
Material consciousness is the cause of one’s conditional life, in which conditions are enforced upon the living entity by the material energy. Although the spirit soul does not do anything and is transcendental to such activities, he is thus affected by conditional life. ॥ 3-26-7 ॥
english translation
भौतिक चेतना ही मनुष्य के बद्धजीवन का कारण है, जिसमें परिस्थितियाँ जीव पर हाबी हो जाती हैं। यद्यपि आत्मा कुछ भी नहीं करता और ऐसे कर्मों से परे रहता है, किन्तु इस प्रकार वह बद्धजीवन से प्रभावित होता है। ॥ ३-२६-७ ॥
