क्रीडन्त्याः पुञ्जिकस्थल्याः कन्दुकैः स्तनगौरवात् । भृशमुद्विग्नमध्यायाः केशविस्रंसितस्रजः ॥ १२-८-२६ ॥
The Apsarā Puñjikasthalī made a show of playing with a number of toy balls. Her waist seemed weighed down by her heavy breasts, and the wreath of flowers in her hair became disheveled. ॥ 12-8-26 ॥

अप्सरा पुंजिकस्थली ने कई खिलौनों की गेंदों के साथ खेलने का प्रदर्शन किया। उसकी कमर उसके भारी स्तनों से बोझिल लग रही थी, और उसके बालों में फूलों की माला अस्त-व्यस्त हो गई थी। ॥ १२-८-२६ ॥

इतस्ततो भ्रमद्दृष्टेश्चलन्त्या अनुकन्दुकम् । वायुर्जहार तद्वासः सूक्ष्मं त्रुटितमेखलम् ॥ १२-८-२७ ॥
As she ran about after the balls, glancing here and there, the belt of her thin garment loosened, and suddenly the wind blew her clothes away. ॥ 12-8-27 ॥

जैसे ही वह गेंदों के पीछे इधर-उधर नज़र दौड़ाई, उसके पतले कपड़े की बेल्ट ढीली हो गई और अचानक हवा ने उसके कपड़े उड़ा दिए। ॥ १२-८-२७ ॥

विससर्ज तदा बाणं मत्वा तं स्वजितं स्मरः । सर्वं तत्राभवन्मोघमनीशस्य यथोद्यमः ॥ १२-८-२८ ॥
Cupid, thinking he had conquered the sage, then shot his arrow. But all these attempts to seduce Mārkaṇḍeya proved futile, just like the useless endeavors of an atheist. ॥ 12-8-28 ॥

कामदेव ने यह सोचकर कि उसने ऋषि को जीत लिया है, अपना बाण चला दिया। लेकिन मार्कण्डेय को लुभाने के ये सभी प्रयास नास्तिक के व्यर्थ प्रयासों की तरह ही व्यर्थ साबित हुए। ॥ १२-८-२८ ॥

त इत्थमपकुर्वन्तो मुनेस्तत्तेजसा मुने । दह्यमाना निववृतुः प्रबोध्याहिमिवार्भकाः ॥ १२-८-२९ ॥
O learned Śaunaka, while Cupid and his followers tried to harm the sage, they felt themselves being burned alive by his potency. Thus they stopped their mischief, just like children who have aroused a sleeping snake. ॥ 12-8-29 ॥

हे विद्वान शौनक, जब कामदेव और उनके अनुयायियों ने ऋषि को नुकसान पहुंचाने की कोशिश की, तो उन्हें लगा कि वे उनकी शक्ति से जिंदा जल गए हैं। इस प्रकार उन्होंने अपनी शरारतें बन्द कर दीं, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे बच्चों ने सोते हुए साँप को जगाया हो। ॥ १२-८-२९ ॥

इतीन्द्रानुचरैर्ब्रह्मन् धर्षितोऽपि महामुनिः । यन्नागादहमो भावं न तच्चित्रं महत्सु हि ॥ १२-८-३० ॥
O brāhmaṇa, the followers of Lord Indra had impudently attacked the saintly Mārkaṇḍeya, yet he did not succumb to any influence of false ego. For great souls such tolerance is not at all surprising. ॥ 12-8-30 ॥
english translation
हे ब्राह्मण, भगवान इंद्र के अनुयायियों ने संत मार्कंडेय पर निर्लज्जता से हमला किया था, फिर भी वह झूठे अहंकार के प्रभाव में नहीं आये। महान आत्माओं के लिए ऐसी सहनशीलता बिल्कुल भी आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है। ॥ १२-८-३० ॥
