दृष्ट्वा निस्तेजसं कामं सगणं भगवान् स्वराट् । श्रुत्वानुभावं ब्रह्मर्षेर्विस्मयं समगात्परम् ॥ १२-८-३१ ॥
The mighty King Indra was most astonished when he heard of the mystic prowess of the exalted sage Mārkaṇḍeya and saw how Cupid and his associates had become powerless in his presence. ॥ 12-8-31 ॥

जब शक्तिशाली राजा इंद्र ने महान ऋषि मार्कंडेय की रहस्यमय शक्ति के बारे में सुना और देखा कि कैसे कामदेव और उनके सहयोगी उनकी उपस्थिति में शक्तिहीन हो गए थे, तो उन्हें सबसे अधिक आश्चर्य हुआ। ॥ १२-८-३१ ॥

तस्यैवं युञ्जतश्चित्तं तपःस्वाध्यायसंयमैः । अनुग्रहायाविरासीन्नरनारायणो हरिः ॥ १२-८-३२ ॥
Desiring to bestow His mercy upon the saintly Mārkaṇḍeya, who had perfectly fixed his mind in self-realization through penance, Vedic study and observance of regulative principles, the Supreme Personality of Godhead personally appeared before the sage in the forms of Nara and Nārāyaṇa. ॥ 12-8-32 ॥

तपस्या, वैदिक अध्ययन और नियामक सिद्धांतों के पालन के माध्यम से आत्म-साक्षात्कार में अपना मन पूरी तरह से केंद्रित करने वाले संत मार्कंडेय पर अपनी दया प्रदान करने की इच्छा से, भगवान का सर्वोच्च व्यक्तित्व व्यक्तिगत रूप से नारा और नारायण के रूप में ऋषि के सामने प्रकट हुआ। ॥ १२-८-३२ ॥

तौ शुक्लकृष्णौ नवकञ्जलोचनौ चतुर्भुजौ रौरववल्कलाम्बरौ । पवित्रपाणी उपवीतकं त्रिवृत् कमण्डलुं दण्डमृजुं च वैणवम् ॥ १२-८-३३ ॥
One of Them was of a whitish complexion, the other blackish, and They both had four arms. Their eyes resembled the petals of blooming lotuses, and They wore garments of black deerskin and bark, along with the three-stranded sacred thread. In Their hands, which were most purifying, They carried the mendicant’s waterpot, straight bamboo staff and lotus-seed prayer beads, ॥ 12-8-33 ॥

उनमें से एक का रंग सफ़ेद था, दूसरे का रंग काला था, और उन दोनों की चार भुजाएँ थीं। उनकी आंखें खिले हुए कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान थीं, और वे काली मृगछाल और छाल से बने वस्त्र और तीन धागे वाला पवित्र धागा पहनते थे। अपने हाथों में, जो सर्वाधिक पवित्र करने वाले थे, वे भिक्षुक का जलपात्र, सीधी बांस की छड़ी और कमल-बीज की प्रार्थना मालाएँ लिए हुए थे, ॥ १२-८-३३ ॥

पद्माक्षमालामुत जन्तुमार्जनं वेदं च साक्षात्तप एव रूपिणौ । तपत्तडिद्वर्णपिशङ्गरोचिषा प्रांशू दधानौ विबुधर्षभार्चितौ ॥ १२-८-३४ ॥
As well as the all-purifying Vedas in the symbolic form of bundles of darbha grass. Their bearing was tall and Their yellow effulgence the color of radiant lightning. Appearing as austerity personified, They were being worshiped by the foremost demigods. ॥ 12-8-34 ॥

साथ ही दर्भा घास के बंडलों के प्रतीकात्मक रूप में सर्व-शुद्धिकारी वेद। उनकी धारियाँ ऊँची थीं और उनकी पीली चमक दीप्तिमान बिजली के समान थी। तपस्या के प्रतीक के रूप में प्रकट होकर, प्रमुख देवताओं द्वारा उनकी पूजा की जा रही थी। ॥ १२-८-३४ ॥

ते वै भगवतो रूपे नरनारायणावृषी । दृष्ट्वोत्थायादरेणोच्चैर्ननामाङ्गेन दण्डवत् ॥ १२-८-३५ ॥
These two sages, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, were the direct personal forms of the Supreme Lord. When Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi saw Them, he immediately stood up and then with great respect offered Them obeisances by falling down flat on the ground like a stick. ॥ 12-8-35 ॥

ये दो ऋषि, नारा और नारायण, सर्वोच्च भगवान के प्रत्यक्ष व्यक्तिगत रूप थे। जब मार्कण्डेय ऋषि ने उन्हें देखा, तो वे तुरंत खड़े हो गए और फिर बड़े आदर के साथ छड़ी की तरह जमीन पर गिरकर उन्हें प्रणाम किया। ॥ १२-८-३५ ॥
