कालस्रोतो जवेनाशु ह्रियमाणस्य नित्यदा । परिणामिनामवस्थास्ता जन्मप्रलयहेतवः ॥ १२-४-३६ ॥
All material entities undergo transformation and are constantly and swiftly eroded by the mighty currents of time. The various stages of existence that material things exhibit are the perpetual causes of their generation and annihilation. ॥ 12-4-36 ॥

सभी भौतिक इकाइयां परिवर्तन से गुजरती हैं और समय की शक्तिशाली धाराओं द्वारा लगातार और तेजी से नष्ट हो जाती हैं। भौतिक वस्तुओं के अस्तित्व के विभिन्न चरण उनकी उत्पत्ति और विनाश के शाश्वत कारण हैं। ॥ १२-४-३६ ॥

अनाद्यन्तवतानेन कालेनेश्वरमूर्तिना । अवस्था नैव दृश्यन्ते वियति ज्योतिषामिव ॥ १२-४-३७ ॥
These stages of existence created by beginningless and endless time, the impersonal representative of the Supreme Lord, are not visible, just as the infinitesimal momentary changes of position of the planets in the sky cannot be directly seen. ॥ 12-4-37 ॥

अनादि और अनंत समय द्वारा बनाए गए अस्तित्व के ये चरण, सर्वोच्च भगवान के अवैयक्तिक प्रतिनिधि, दिखाई नहीं देते हैं, जैसे आकाश में ग्रहों की स्थिति में होने वाले अनंत क्षणिक परिवर्तनों को सीधे नहीं देखा जा सकता है। ॥ १२-४-३७ ॥

नित्यो नैमित्तिकश्चैव तथा प्राकृतिको लयः । आत्यन्तिकश्च कथितः कालस्य गतिरीदृशी ॥ १२-४-३८ ॥
In this way the progress of time is described in terms of the four kinds of annihilation — continuous, occasional, elemental and final. ॥ 12-4-38 ॥

इस प्रकार समय की प्रगति को चार प्रकार के प्रलय के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है - निरंतर, सामयिक, तात्विक और अंतिम। ॥ १२-४-३८ ॥

एताः कुरुश्रेष्ठ जगद्विधातुः नारायणस्याखिलसत्त्वधाम्नः । लीलाकथास्ते कथिताः समासतः कार्त्स्न्येन नाजोऽप्यभिधातुमीशः ॥ १२-४-३९ ॥
O best of the Kurus, I have related to you these narrations of the pastimes of Lord Nārāyaṇa, the creator of this world and the ultimate reservoir of all existence, presenting them to you only in brief summary. Even Lord Brahmā himself would be incapable of describing them entirely. ॥ 12-4-39 ॥

हे कुरुश्रेष्ठ, मैंने इस संसार के रचयिता और समस्त अस्तित्व के परम भण्डार भगवान नारायण की लीलाओं के इन आख्यानों को संक्षेप में आपके समक्ष प्रस्तुत किया है। यहाँ तक कि स्वयं भगवान ब्रह्मा भी उनका सम्पूर्ण वर्णन करने में असमर्थ होंगे। ॥ १२-४-३९ ॥

संसारसिन्धुमतिदुस्तरमुत्तितीर्षोर्नान्यः प्लवो भगवतः पुरुषोत्तमस्य । लीलाकथारसनिषेवणमन्तरेण पुंसो भवेद्विविधदुःखदवार्दितस्य ॥ १२-४-४० ॥
For a person who is suffering in the fire of countless miseries and who desires to cross the insurmountable ocean of material existence, there is no suitable boat except that of cultivating devotion to the transcendental taste for the narrations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead’s pastimes. ॥ 12-4-40 ॥

जो व्यक्ति अनगिनत दुखों की अग्नि में पीड़ित है और जो भौतिक अस्तित्व के दुर्गम महासागर को पार करने की इच्छा रखता है, उसके लिए भगवान की लीलाओं के वर्णन के पारलौकिक स्वाद के प्रति भक्ति विकसित करने के अलावा कोई उपयुक्त नाव नहीं है। ॥ १२-४-४० ॥
