सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति दृश्यन्ते पुरुषे गुणाः । कालसञ्चोदितास्ते वै परिवर्तन्त आत्मनि ॥ १२-३-२६ ॥
The material modes — goodness, passion and ignorance — whose permutations are observed within a person’s mind, are set into motion by the power of time. ॥ 12-3-26 ॥

भौतिक गुण - अच्छाई, जुनून और अज्ञान - जिनका क्रमपरिवर्तन किसी व्यक्ति के दिमाग में देखा जाता है, समय की शक्ति से गति में आते हैं। ॥ १२-३-२६ ॥

प्रभवन्ति यदा सत्त्वे मनोबुद्धीन्द्रियाणि च । तदा कृतयुगं विद्याज्ज्ञाने तपसि यद्रुचिः ॥ १२-३-२७ ॥
When the mind, intelligence and senses are solidly fixed in the mode of goodness, that time should be understood as Satya-yuga, the age of truth. People then take pleasure in knowledge and austerity. ॥ 12-3-27 ॥

जब मन, बुद्धि और इंद्रियाँ पूरी तरह से सतोगुण में स्थिर हो जाती हैं, तो उस समय को सत्य-युग, सत्य का युग समझना चाहिए। तब लोग ज्ञान और तपस्या में आनंद लेते हैं। ॥ १२-३-२७ ॥

यदा धर्मार्थकामेषु भक्तिर्भवति देहिनाम् । तदा त्रेता रजो वृत्तिरिति जानीहि बुद्धिमन् ॥ १२-३-२८ ॥
O most intelligent one, when the conditioned souls are devoted to their duties but have ulterior motives and seek personal prestige, you should understand such a situation to be the age of Tretā, in which the functions of passion are prominent. ॥ 12-3-28 ॥

हे परम बुद्धिमान, जब बद्ध आत्माएं अपने कर्तव्यों के प्रति समर्पित होती हैं, लेकिन उनके गुप्त उद्देश्य होते हैं और वे व्यक्तिगत प्रतिष्ठा चाहते हैं, तो आपको ऐसी स्थिति को त्रेता का युग समझना चाहिए, जिसमें जुनून के कार्य प्रमुख हैं। ॥ १२-३-२८ ॥

यदा लोभस्त्वसन्तोषो मानो दम्भोऽथ मत्सरः । कर्मणां चापि काम्यानां द्वापरं तद्रजस्तमः ॥ १२-३-२९ ॥
When greed, dissatisfaction, false pride, hypocrisy and envy become prominent, along with attraction for selfish activities, such a time is the age of Dvāpara, dominated by the mixed modes of passion and ignorance. ॥ 12-3-29 ॥

जब लालच, असंतोष, मिथ्या अभिमान, पाखंड और ईर्ष्या प्रमुख हो जाती है, साथ ही स्वार्थी गतिविधियों के लिए आकर्षण होता है, ऐसा समय द्वापर का युग है, जिसमें रजोगुण और अज्ञान के मिश्रित गुणों का प्रभुत्व होता है। ॥ १२-३-२९ ॥

यदा मायानृतं तन्द्रा निद्रा हिंसा विषादनम् । शोको मोहो भयं दैन्यं स कलिस्तामसः स्मृतः ॥ १२-३-३० ॥
When there is a predominance of cheating, lying, sloth, sleepiness, violence, depression, lamentation, bewilderment, fear and poverty, that age is Kali, the age of the mode of ignorance. ॥ 12-3-30 ॥
