    कथञ्चिदुपकारेण कृतेनैकेन तुष्यति । न स्मरत्यपकाराणां शतमप्यात्मवत्तया ॥ २-१-११kathaJcidupakAreNa kRtenaikena tuSyati । na smaratyapakArANAM zatamapyAtmavattayA ॥ 2-1-11Gifted with selfrestraint, Rama was pleased even with a single benefit done somehow to him, yet did not remember even a hundred offences committed by others. ॥ 2-1-11॥

    स हि रूपोपपन्नश्च वीर्यवाननसूयकः । भूमावनुपमः सूनुर्गुणैर्दशरथोपमः ॥ २-१-९sa hi rUpopapannazca vIryavAnanasUyakaH । bhUmAvanupamaH sUnurguNairdazarathopamaH ॥ 2-1-9Endowed with beauty and strengh, free from envy, and in virtues equal to Dasharatha, Rama was verily an incomparable son on earth. ॥ 2-1-9॥

    कौसल्या शुशुभे तेन पुत्रेणामिततेजसा । यथा वरेण देवानामदितिर्वज्रपाणिना ॥ २-१-८kausalyA zuzubhe tena putreNAmitatejasA । yathA vareNa devAnAmaditirvajrapANinA ॥ 2-1-8Kaushalya looked splendid with her son, Rama of boundless energy, as did Aditi with the chief of the gods Indra, wielder of thunder. ॥ 2-1-8॥

    स हि देवैरुदीर्णस्य रावणस्य वधार्थिभिः । अर्थितो मानुषे लोके जज्ञे विष्णुः सनातनः ॥ २-१-७sa hi devairudIrNasya rAvaNasya vadhArthibhiH । arthito mAnuSe loke jajJe viSNuH sanAtanaH ॥ 2-1-7Entreated by the devatas desirous of slaying arrogant Ravana, the eternal Vishnu was indeed born in the mortal world as Rama. ॥ 2-1-7॥

    तेषामपि महातेजा रामो रतिकरः पितुः । स्वयम्भूरिव भूतानां बभूव गुणवत्तरः ॥ २-१-६teSAmapi mahAtejA rAmo ratikaraH pituH । svayambhUriva bhUtAnAM babhUva guNavattaraH ॥ 2-1-6Rama, like the Brahma among all the living beings, the most virtuous among those brothers and the mightiest was a great source of joy for his father. ॥ 2-1-6॥

    सर्व एव तु तस्येष्टाश्चत्वारः पुरुषर्षभाः । स्वशरीराद्विनिर्वृत्ताश्चत्वार इव बाहवः ॥ २-१-५sarva eva tu tasyeSTAzcatvAraH puruSarSabhAH । svazarIrAdvinirvRttAzcatvAra iva bAhavaH ॥ 2-1-5Dasaratha was bestowing his equal love to all his four sons who were best among men, as though they were his four hands emerging out of his own body. ॥ 2-1-5॥

    राजापि तौ महातेजाः सस्मार प्रोषितौ सुतौ । उभौ भरतशत्रुघ्नौ महेन्द्रवरुणोपमौ ॥ २-१-४rAjApi tau mahAtejAH sasmAra proSitau sutau । ubhau bharatazatrughnau mahendravaruNopamau ॥ 2-1-4The glorious king Dasharatha also remembered his sons, Bharata and Shatrughna, who were like the great Indra and Varuna, (now) out of his state. ॥ 2-1-4॥

    तत्रापि निवसन्तौ तौ तर्प्यमाणौ च कामतः । भ्रातरौ स्मरतां वीरौ वृद्धं दशरथं नृपम् ॥ २-१-३tatrApi nivasantau tau tarpyamANau ca kAmataH । bhrAtarau smaratAM vIrau vRddhaM dazarathaM nRpam ॥ 2-1-3Though both the heroic brothers stayed there satisfied, on their own they constantly remembered their aged father. ॥ 2-1-3॥

    स तत्र न्यवसद्भ्रात्रा सह सत्कारसत्कृतः । मातुलेनाश्वपतिना पुत्रस्नेहेन लालितः ॥ २-१-२sa tatra nyavasadbhrAtrA saha satkArasatkRtaH । mAtulenAzvapatinA putrasnehena lAlitaH ॥ 2-1-2Treated with good hospitality and fatherly affection by his maternal uncle ( Yudhajit ), who was a lord of cavalry ( Ashvapati ), Bharata stayed on there along with his brother. ॥ 2-1-2
